*I am told that it is a mark of growth as a writer if your old writings make you cringe. So that's a good sign, I suppose. Fics marked with WARNING: OLD were written in high school, and frankly are kind of awful, but the ones included here for some reason have sentimental value to me, such that I didn't want to leave them out. There are others that I'm pretending don't exist.

Happy Yuletide and thank you in advance for writing for me! I really hope you'll have fun. This post has some prompts and general info about my preferences, but (a) I'm pretty easy to please and (b) Optional Details Are Optional, so if there's a story of your heart that you've been waiting for write, don't worry about sticking too close to my requests: write the story you're into! I'm sure I'll love it if you loved writing it. (I mean, I do still want a story in one of the fandoms I requested and about the characters I picked, but you know what I mean.) The purpose of this letter is to make things easier for you -- you don't even need to keep reading if you don't want. If what you got in the assignment email is enough for you to start writing, go for it! Conversely, if this letter doesn't have enough info and you want to know more about the stuff I'm into, I can be found under the name meretricula on tumblr and the AO3 as well.

Likes: Happiness. I want everybody to be happy or at least not overtly miserable at the end of the fic. They can suffer and be angsty in the beginning or middle but please please please let the ending be sunshine and rainbows or the promise of sunshine and rainbows on the not-too-distant horizon. I'm also happy to get a fic that's 100% fluffy sunshine and rainbows all the way through. I'm a big fan of tropes where characters have a lot of history between them -- friends to lovers, childhood sweethearts, best frenemies, sibling relationships, etc. -- and you'll see those popping up a lot in my prompts. Basically I'm ALL ABOUT THE FEELINGS. I'm not a big fan of porn for porn's sake but if you're happier writing about people expressing their feelings via sex, that's great too! Gen, het, slash, femslash and poly are all good with me.

I also like: lots of background detail; tropes and cliches; subverted/inverted tropes and cliches; lots of dialogue; limited third person POV; canon settings, canon divergences AND alternate universes; food; competence; found families; mixed media/documentation fic.

Dislikes: major character death (as in, this character is gone and not coming back; death followed by resurrection or altered form of existence is fine so long as the character is still around); humiliation; intense angst; graphic violence and gore; noncon and dubcon; first and second person POV; AUs that change the nature of characters' backstory together (e.g. if two people have known each other since childhood I'd rather not have an AU where they meet for the first time as adults, and if they've been best friends their whole lives I'd rather not read an AU where they're enemies instead)

Hi there! I've never done [livejournal.com profile] trickortreatex before, so hopefully I'm doing this right. I'm really excited for Halloween this year, and I hope you are too! This post has some extra information about what I like/don't like, but standard disclaimer: if you prefer to just go from the prompts, you don't have to read any of this. I want you to write the story you want to write. If there is ever a question in your heart as to whether you should fulfill some nitpicking optional detail in my request or write the story you have dreamed of writing since you offered the fandom, go with the story of your dreams, because if you love writing it, I'm sure I'll love reading it! The purpose of this post is to make your life easier, not harder. Also, my prompts tend to be very shippy, but if we only matched on one character or you just aren't feeling the romance, that's totally fine! Write the character you signed up for, don't worry about the prompt.

(If you want even more information about me, which I don't think anyone would but I know some people like to read their recipient's blog, I'm meretricula everywhere -- AO3, LJ, DW, and Tumblr. I'm somewhat more active on Tumblr these days than anywhere else.)

Likes: Happiness. I want everybody to be happy or at least not overtly miserable at the end of the fic. Trick or Treat preference: well, I like happy stuff, so treats are good! But I also love love love stories with monsters and magic and the supernatural, so I'm 100% down for trick fic so long as it ends happily.

Fanfic/Fanart preference: I'm not a very visual person, so I generally prefer words over pictures.

Hi, friend! Thank you so much for offering one of my tiny fandoms -- I am so excited to read whatever you write, and I hope you will have a wonderful time writing for me! This post has some general information about stuff I like/don't like, because I prefer it when my recipient gives me extra stuff to go on, but if you prefer to just go from the prompts, you don't have to read any of this. I also like: lots of background detail; tropes and cliches; subverted/inverted tropes and cliches; lots of dialogue; limited third person POV; canon settings, canon divergences AND alternate universes; food; competence; found families; mixed media/documentation fic.

So about a million years ago [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette prompted me to do a Baby Dream Team fanmix on tumblr, and I promptly failed to do much of anything except vaguely think about suitably tragic song lyrics (sorry I'm the worst) until I was finally impelled by a nostalgic trip through my football tag and my intense Baby Dream Team Feels (tm) about the song Laughter Lines by Bastille to finish the mix and make a cover and even write a drabble to go along with it? This productivity feels very strange. Anyway, I hope you like/don't hate this, Lee! I'm very out of practice with everything, including feeling things. \o/

I swear somebody actually asked for this! also, there's a lot of dom/sub dynamic stuff in this pairing and especially in this rec set (sometimes formalized, sometimes not), so if that's not your thing maybe steer clear. I'm into it (also, I think it makes a lot of sense... oh Tyler, you just need someone to look after you better), but if you want more vanilla recs lemme know and I'll see what I can do!

Game Plan (10281 words) by thehoyden
Summary: Unlike Nealsy, Evgeni can cook his own food when he has it. He’s perfectly capable of making breakfast. His kitchen is well-equipped, and he’s got some good basic cooking skills down. In short, he is not going to starve to death if left to his own devices.

None of this seems to matter to Sid.
Notes: I am a total sucker for a story with food in it. This is a typical fluffy [livejournal.com profile] thehoyden get-together fic, and it's delightful.

let your heart be light (3231 words) by ohtempora
Summary: They're still doing better than the Sabres. The Sabres have two games in hand.
Notes: Dumb Oilers babies being dumb should not still be entertaining at this point, but ah well. It kind of is.

the courtship of patrick kane (9673 words) by hazel
Summary: “Well,” Kaner says finally. “If you want to keep cockblocking me with the ladies, you’re gonna have to make it worth my while.” He’s smirking like it’s a challenge, like he knows Jon can’t ever let a challenge drop, and that’s it. That’s how Jon realises that he’s totally, completely, embarrassingly head-over-heels in love with Patrick fucking Kane.

Take a(n Espresso) Shot and (French) Press Yourself Against Me (12742 words) by knew_her_when
Summary: James is a terrible barista, Paul is a grad student who snarks about his coffee but keeps coming back
(That's word-for-word the request I chose and the best summary one could write.)

Bending with the Road (11746 words) by VampireSpider
Summary: “Booked a hotel in Charlotte,” James says as they’re getting into the car. “Should take us about seven hours to get there if the traffic’s not too bad.” He glances up to meet Paul’s eyes and grins a little. “Unless we get distracted along the way.”
Paul rolls his eyes. “Or you get us lost,” he says.
*
James has a schedule. Paul has places to be.
Notes: I AM STILL SO UPSET ABOUT THIS FIC GIVING ME ALL THESE FEELINGS. But in a good way, I think? I just get so mad at the thought of things not working out perfectly for these two morons. They'll probably be all right anyway.

Stars Apart (13331 words) by Java_Genie
Summary: It’s easy for Geno to imagine how things could better, out in the black. He’s read all the comic books and seen all the movies about the people who leave the core behind and find a second life, a better life, as pioneers and outlaws on the frontier of space. It means opportunity—the chance to scrub yourself clean of all the bad names and mean labels the core gives people born to parents not rich enough, smart enough or brave enough.
But Sid, he was born with all the right labels—and Geno can’t think of a single thing Sid could find out among the stars that he couldn’t have here at home.
Notes: FIREFLY AU AW YEAH.

Close to Water (2122 words) by derryderrydown
Summary: "I was wondering." Sid cleared his throat and looked awkward, and Geno had a moment of dread over what horror Sid was going to ask of him, before Sid said, in a rush, "Do you want to go canoeing?"
Notes: "Canoeing" ahahahahaha oh god.

Bluehawk (16860 words) by aohatsu

Notes: I don't see a lot of girl!Tazer fic, and I quite liked this one!

make you a believer (7924 words) by Katarin
Summary: PK pretends he and Carey are dating, without telling Carey. It's Christmas with the Subbans!
Notes: I already yelled at everyone to read this on Twitter, but just in case somebody missed that, EVERYONE GO READ THIS FIC IMMEDIATELY. Everything about it is perfect. PK's cheerful attitude towards casual sex. His relationship with everyone in his family, especially his mom. Carey's relationship with everyone in PK's family, especially Malcolm. PK's inevitable oblivious tromping over Carey's heart. Yes. Glorious.

we're so close to something better left unknown (10431 words) by sesame_seed
Summary: Prompt 1: Blackhawks, Toews/Kane, power imbalance - it could be teacher/student, bodyguard/witness, even assassin/target - I'd just really like a fic where Toews absolutely should not give in to his feelings for Kane, but he does anyway.
Notes: The summary sucks, the fic is great, please do not be put off. It's about fixing a power imbalance, not taking advantage of it.

Space Kaner (2991 words) by celli
Summary: Patrick has an extra toe from an unfortunate accident as a child and an inconvenient crush on his commanding officer. It gets worse from there.
Notes: Womp womp STAR TREK AU yeah that's right.

Banned (10674 words) by Vitula
Summary: “Temporarily banned by mod taz3r: misleading use of geography,” reads his third ban of the month.
Kaner stares at his phone's screen for a long moment before angrily muttering, “but it fucking is Winterpeg.” He's not sure if this is more or less embarrassing than the time Jonny banned him from the hockey forum for unsporting conduct for insulting Canada's Olympic candidates.

Hate to see you go (4128 words) by littlemissaily
Summary: ... love to watch you leave.
Carey does not want a piece of that ass, okay? He just admires a man who looks good in a suit.

Next up: a long-overdue personal update and some recs! I'm very very slowly working my way through the Yuletide fic I downloaded before reveals, but I promised [livejournal.com profile] khoshgeleh_16 I'd rec her my favorites of the hockey exchange, and I've already picked my way through that.

I wrote a thing! I've fallen off the bandwagon writing-wise in a really bad way, so I'm actually very pleased that I managed to finish something. I've got to get back in the habit for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! (Speaking of which, if you are in the Boston area, there's a doodle poll for potential writer meet-ups here. I've been to meet-ups this woman has hosted before and I had a blast!) But yeah. Writing! Written by me! Even if it is hockey fic, to my secret shame.

title: the real hockey widows of new jersey
fandom: Hockey RPF
pairing: Danny Briere/Claude Giroux
rating: PG
word count: 2787
summary: "Since when does Sylvie like you?" Danny demanded.

"Why wouldn't Sylvie like me?
I'm not divorced from her." Claude paused, then added thoughtfully, "Also, I cook, and I'm never late picking the boys up from school. I think that's a big part of it."
notes: So once upon a time [livejournal.com profile] doctor_denmark and I had a conversation on twitter about how much we wanted to see Claude being the Briere kids' stepmom while Danny was in Montreal (said conversation is immortalized here) and then I decided that more than anything in the world, I needed for Sylvie and Claude to have co-parent bonding nights over a lot of white wine that ended in drunk-dialing Danny. Uh. That's it, that's the story. Sorry guys. Infinite thanks to [livejournal.com profile] luxover, internationally recognized expert on Claude Giroux, for fixing my sad attempt at writing Claude's English, and to [livejournal.com profile] khoshgeleh_16 for helping with the title! ♥

it's the best time of the year!!! I finally got my dear yulegoat letter up, if anybody else is like me and likes to read the requests before assignments even come out and speculate about the fic that may be written this year.

also in this post, because why not: my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] orangecrush1189 asked me a while ago for recs that might be good for someone who's never seen a vid before. I thought about that a lot, since thinking about vids is one of my favorite things, natch. idk if there's a best way to ease someone into vids, but I think one of the major barriers to understanding them is not having the visual vocabulary to pick up what any given vid is trying to do without external prompting? so I decided that maybe it would make sense to show someone a few good examples of the more common types of vids -- as soon as you realize they're not all the same and they don't all use the same vocabulary, it gets way easier! (for most things, anyway. there's plenty of vids out there that I still don't really get.) if y'all have suggestions for different ways to introduce a friend to the fine art of vid appreciation, I'd love to hear them too!

First of all: THANK YOU, amazing yulegoat, for signing up to write one of the tiny beloved fandoms of my heart! I hope that you will have a good time writing for me, and that your Yuletide will be full of joy and fannish delight! Or failing that, that at least my requests aren't already driving you to default in despair. But fingers crossed you'll have fun, and if there is ever a question in your heart as to whether you should fulfill some nitpicking optional detail in my request or write the story you have dreamed of writing since you offered the fandom, go with the story of your dreams, because if you love writing it, I'm sure I'll love reading it! This letter is just to give some additional guidance in case you want it; it's not meant to make things harder for you, and you should feel free to ignore the whole thing if you'd prefer.

That said, some general likes and dislikes:

Basically, I would prefer a happy ending. I like characters bantering with each other and goofing off and being total dorks! And I love love love characters showing how much they love each other. It can be romantic, it can be familial, it can be friendship, but give me people who really care about each other and worry and hover and bully in a loving manner and just generally want to make each other happy. Also? Cuddling. I am a fan.

Other things that I like! Crazy AUs are always great. Want to write the fic where they're ice-skaters or porn stars or hookers or college students? Feel the urge to bring your fandom to work with you for a day? GO FOR IT! Reach into that box of cliches and pull one out at random if you feel like it, because I eat them up like candy. That said! I also really like stuff that stays super close to canon, but I am a tiny bit picky about things being accurate if you go this route. (I know, right? Anyone who's this into lunatic Alternate Universes has no ground to be fussing about canon compliance.) But anyway, if you are very familiar with the fandom and you're comfortable writing something that sticks obsessively close to canon, I love that too. Seriously, I like it when people put footnotes on their fic so I can check their references. I'm weird like that.

Things I don't like: pretty small list. No deathfic, please. No super-intense wrist-slashing angst, non-con or dub-con. No woman-bashing. No gay-bashing. If difficult topics like internalized misogyny or homophobia or racism are part of the canon or you want to explore them, don't feel like you need to white-wash anything, but do it carefully, okay? (I know it seems like that should go without saying but JUST IN CASE.) I'm a bit of a grammar nazi (I know, it's a character flaw) so if that's something you know you have issues with, get a beta to give it a quick scrub. :)

my requests: blurred lines sexy boys parody, north and south, the outlaws of sherwood, some girls, tennis rpf )

Most importantly of all: HAVE FUN!
meretricula: (fandom librarian)
I made it! Thirty days of recs! But I couldn't fit everything I wanted to in, so here's all the sets I started and didn't manage to finish. (Forgive me for not writing notes for everything -- I'm sleepy, and there's a lot of them.) I hope you guys enjoyed September Recs! And if you ever want recs for something from me, well, it doesn't have to be September for you to ask. ;)

Second-to-last day of September Recs! Oh dear. Well, my quest to incept the few of you remaining who haven't surrendered to your dark overlords of hockey fandom continues, I guess. I usually go for the big pairings first in fandoms I don't know the canon for, on the grounds that it's easier to absorb the fanon that way, but theoretically you could also go the opposite route and try out rarepair fic, since it generally assumes there is no established fanon to recognize anyway. A lot of these fics feature people I'd never heard of before I started reading, and I liked them anyway! I consider that a pretty strong endorsement.

young punks takin' shots, strippin' down to dirty socks, by [livejournal.com profile] hanet [Sam Gagner/Nail Yakupov]
A very old plotline -- I'm gay, you're gay, we're both closeted, let's make sweet love since we have no other options -- that's refreshed with a charmingly frank POV and the oddest, most perfect details. Nail can't drink because he's Muslim! Jizz socks! Nuge looking like a gay porn centerfold! Went in not knowing who Gags or Nail was, came out shipping them like the Titanic.

If the Right One Came Along, by [livejournal.com profile] hapakitsune [Kris Letang/Marc Staal]
Nominally this is the sequel to a Sid/Geno fic, but I don't think any prior knowledge is really necessary except that Kris and Marc both played small mentoring roles in Sid's great homosexual awakening. I think the story would actually work without any connection to hockey fandom at all, as just a very lovely slow build romance set mostly in New York City. The hurricane forcing them into a situation where they finally admit their feelings is maybe a bit cliche, but it works; it's a very New York story.

don't think I'm coming home, by [livejournal.com profile] 12ways [Curtis Hamilton/Josh Nicholls]
These aren't even NHL players; I guarantee you, nobody has heard of them, so don't worry. They're baby hockey players, and they're so cute, and so in love in a very bro sort of way. It's an adorable story guaranteed to give you feelings.

Fall Down At Your Door, by [livejournal.com profile] level3puckbunny [Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Nail Yakupov]
Meet-cute with a slightly implausible level of yenta-ing from a variety of side characters, but if you're willing to suspend your disbelief it's adorable!

A Month of Sundays, by Kelfin [Erik Johnson/Gabe Landeskog]
Warning right off the bat that this is still a WIP, but if I have to suffer while I wait for it to be finished so can you. And it's really, really good so far, with an eye for the details of Midwestern Christian life that's sometimes funny and sometimes absolutely brutal. I personally adore Gabe Landeskog (Swedish Prince of My Heart) and always want him to have nice things, but more than that this story makes me want for things to be okay for Erik. I genuinely just want to hug him at this point and tell him he deserves to be happy. (Author, if you are reading this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE finish soon, I can't take this heartbreak anymore.)

I'm so sleepy, and yet I also really want to make chocolate cookies! But instead I am here making a post for September Recs, such is my dedication to the cause. [livejournal.com profile] idhren24 asked for crossovers, but I'm not super into crossover fic, so I have decided to interpret this as crossover vids! I had a time and a half getting the list of my favorite crossover vids down to just five, let me tell you. So many delightful vids out there!

The Lightning Strike, by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 [Kings, Merlin, Alexander]
An absolutely masterful job marrying together the stories of David and Jonathan, Merlin and Arthur, and Alexander and Hephaistion. I've never seen a vid that used external sources like this -- the slow pan around the Michelangelo statue of David was especially cool! And the way the cinematography is used to point out parallels is really stunning, too. Every time I watch the clip of Hephaistion's ring falling and then Arthur's torch, I get chills.

I Enjoy Being A Girl, by [livejournal.com profile] absolutedestiny [Alias, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly]
I think this is one of the more accessible vids I've ever watched; I remember trying to show my mom a few vids several years ago, and this is the only one she really "got". You don't have to be fully conversant in the idiom of vidding to appreciate girls kicking ass! I really enjoy that Veronica Mars is included, even though she doesn't kick ass in the conventional manner. Intellectual ass-kicking still counts!

Needs, by [livejournal.com profile] tearful_eye [Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha]
The cinematography! SO GORGEOUS.

Starships, by [livejournal.com profile] bironic [Scifi Films and Television]
This is possibly the best vid to work out to that I've discovered so far. So bouncy! So inspiring! So full of spaceships! The external shots of various ships are total nostalgia bait and they work, god damn it. Now I'm having feels about all the Star Trek series.

Destiny Calling, by [livejournal.com profile] charmax [Superhero Films]
This was made in 2006, before the explosion of Marvel comics movies, and I think it's really interesting to see all the superhero movies that show up here! And it's [livejournal.com profile] charmax, so the fact that the technical details and artistic vision of the vid are amazing goes without saying. Love how seamlessly animated source material is integrated into live action.

Everyone loves a good Regency Romance, right? I'm so pleased that [livejournal.com profile] mardia suggested I do a set of Regency AUs. The subsequent Twitter debate over which hockey players to cast in retellings of my favorite Heyer novels (Cotillion: Sid is Kitty, Geno is Freddy, Nealsy is Dolph and Paulie is Hannah; Friday's Child: Hallsy is Hero, Ebs is Sherry; The Masqueraders: AGally is Prudence, BGally is Robin and Prusty is Sir Anthony) is delightful and still ongoing. Ironically, however, I have elected not to put any hockey fic in this set, because we need to branch out a little. XD

A Matter of Inconvenience, by [livejournal.com profile] astolat [American Idol RPF, Adam Lambert/Kris Allen]
A Civil Contract is the WORST HEYER; do not read it. WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU, LYNTON. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU. HOW DARE YOU?!?! Ughhhh Jenny deserved so much better. That said, for some reason fandom loves rewriting A Civil Contract? And the rewrites are generally much more delightful than the original. This is number one! Thoroughly entertaining, as one might expect of [livejournal.com profile] astolat.

Cursed at First, But Mended, by Lake [The Eagle, Esca/Marcus]
Marriage of convenience is such a great trope. And Marcus remains the woobie of my heart forever and ever amen, God bless.

Forever Can Never Be Long Enough, Or The Earl Of Epsom Takes A Husband, by torakowalski [The Social Network RPF, Jesse Eisenberg/Andrew Garfield]
And A Civil Contract rewrite number two! It's been a while since I read this but I remember really enjoying it, especially the characterization of Jesse's little sister.

Regency AU, by Leyna [Stargate: Atlantis, Rodney McKay/John Shepard]
A thoroughly creative name, I know. But I clicked on the title while I was poking through the Alternate Universe - Regency tag, and I fell in love. What a beautiful painting! I don't think I've really recced art before, but this one is great.

The Courtship of Mr. Bond, by marlowe_tops [Skyfall, Bond/Q]
On the one hand, wildly out of character (errs on the side of woobification). On the other, DELIGHTFUL.

Wow, September is almost over. Noooo, September! Stay longer! I'm going to have to do something writer-ly for October to get in shape for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and I'm just not ready for that yet. Anyway! [livejournal.com profile] dreamofthem asked for friendship fic, so here we go...

Fortunate Son, by [livejournal.com profile] astolat [American Idol RPF, David Cook+David Archuleta]
David Cook and David Archuleta get stranded in the wilderness together and have to rely on each other to survive. This is one of the more realistic lead-ins to the kind of codependency that shows up in platonic friendship fic -- Cook and Archie just went through an incredibly traumatic experience together, of course they don't want to be apart when they return to civilization. There's a slash sequel which I enjoy very much, but I like that this fic is pure friendship fic.

That Awkward/Awesome Moment, by [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever [Community, Troy+Abed]
True bromance is visible even when you can't hear the words.

His Majesty's Dragon, by Naomi Novik [original]
Ok this is maybe cheating but if you like friendship fic you really, really, really need to read the Temeraire books, because they are basically friendship fic turned up to eleven. The entire plot revolves around how much Laurence and Temeraire love each other and cannot bear to be separated even for the good of the nation. Like, if an Austen novel were written about a man and his dragon, that would be the Temeraire series, and the scene where Laurence finally admits to himself and Temeraire that he would rather leave his entire life behind than lose Temeraire is seriously Darcy's-second-proposal level of OH GOD MY FEELS. I have a .pdf of the first book that the publisher was distributing for free as a promotional thing and I will share it with anyone who can't make it to the library to check out a physical copy. (After the first book you're on your own, though. I have paid for all eight books so far, four in hardcover, and JE NE REGRETTE RIEN. Give Naomi your money so she can write us more books!)

Rely On You, by [livejournal.com profile] rsadelle [Hockey RPF, Tyler Brown+Tyler Seguin]
Oh, Segs. :( As fond as I am of the Tylers as a romantic pairing, there's something that really gets me about Brownie being there for Segs throughout all his disastrous drama just because he loves him and wants him to be happy, despite having zero interest in him as a sexual being. (I already recced Love in Fast Forward for similar reasons, and if you didn't click on it the first time round you really, really should. The scene where Jeff is having a slow but inevitable meltdown because he's closeted and lonely and Mike grumpily cuddles him so he won't be touch-starved anymore kills me every time.)

Flying Blind, by scintilla10 [Code Name: Verity, Julie/Maddie]
I was struggling to come up with a fifth rec for this theme and upset that it was such a sausage fest, and then I realized that I literally could not think of a single fic that presents female friendship the way the platonic friendship trope is handled in fic: as love that isn't sexual but is overwhelmingly important, more so than any other relationship is those characters' lives, to the point where actions that are usually coded as romantic are seen as normal displays of friendship. And that is bullshit, guys, because women are every bit as capable as men of sustaining deep, meaningful, nonsexual friendships with each other. And then I went poking at the Friendship tag on the AO3 and got angrier and angrier about how impossible it was to find a story like the three fics I just recced but about women. (Please rec me some. I'm like 95% sure there must be some Clint+Natasha SUPER INTENSE DRAMA FRIENDSHIP CUDDLING fic that I just couldn't find.) Long story short go read Code Name: Verity by Elizabeth Wein, because it is beautiful and Julie and Maddie's relationship is the stuff of which a thousand thousand slashfics should be born, and then come back and read this fic. (I'm cheating because this is indeed a slashfic, not friendship fic. But it's friends to lovers and they spend most of the story being friends and most of you probably need to read the book first which IS just friendship so whatever I'm calling it a night.)

I have this whole thesis on how vidding is really kind of a form of choreography (music! motion! telling stories!) which I will spare you for the time being, except to say that I think dance vids, when done right, are kind of the purest form of vidding and are also AWESOME. And this vid was doing the rounds on Twitter a little while ago, which made me think of seeing what others I could dig up!

Dancing at the Movies, by guidomito [various fandoms]
A fabulous compilation of dance clips from all sorts of sources! I don't recognize all of them (and some of them I recognize now but didn't when I downloaded the video -- [livejournal.com profile] aramley has made me watch Mary Poppins and Singing in the Rain since then, haha) but it's not really a vid that needs context. It's a dance!

I Wanna Dance, by [livejournal.com profile] jarrow [Glee]
DANCING LESBIANS! I have a lot of feelings about Brittany/Santana, considering I've only seen about half a season of Glee. And the dancing is really perfectly handled as well as the shippy theme! [livejournal.com profile] jarrow is always great with matching motion to music.

Boom Boom Ba, by [livejournal.com profile] charmax [Xena]
I'm stretching my definition of what a "dance vid" is by including this -- there's definitely dancing, but it's the slow, sexy kind. It's not a Club Vivid sort of vid, that's for sure, but I love it.

Party Hard, by Phiz [Community]
Who knew there was so much dancing in Community? I love the clips of Troy and Britta on stage, and I crack up every time I watch Jeff doing his weird routine in his underwear with the pool cue. PERFECTLY matched to the music.

Dance Across the Floor, by [livejournal.com profile] littleheaven70 [Scrubs]
Another source where I never realized there was enough dancing to make a whole vid about it! Oh, Scrubs. Nostalgia city.

Today is a day to appreciate PK Subban and Carey Price and all the joy they bring to our lives -- especially [livejournal.com profile] mardia's, since she was the one who told me to post this set today! Here's to you, adorable goofball and supernaturally attractive dimpled one. We love you very much.

It's Complicated, by katarin
Feelings, feelings, ALL MY FEELINGS, behold the fic that made me ship this with the fire of a thousand dying stars. Carey! And his horrible insecurities! And PK not getting it, and not getting it, and not getting it, until you want to grab him and shake him and scream YOU BOTH LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH WHY ARE YOU MAKING CAREY SAD. But uh I promise everything is fine in the end! It's great! YOU'LL LOVE IT.

All Talk, by [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine
The first section is PK/Carey and the rest are other pairings (and all very hot as well!), just fyi. There should be so much more fic about Carey tying PK up. REAMS of fic. Everybody go write fic about Carey tying PK up. But this is an EXCELLENT start.

Five Days in Toronto, by [livejournal.com profile] cominginside
PK makes Carey come visit him during the offseason and do all kinds of touristy stuff and he takes him to the fair to look at the horses because HE TRULY LOVES CAREY'S INNER COWBOY and I just. I cannot. My heart. PK WINS CAREY A STUFFED UNICORN YOU GUYS.

Attention, by [livejournal.com profile] mardia
Ok so there is a little more fic about Carey tying PK up! Although it's kind of less about the actual tying up and more about, like, feelings, just, ugh, it's only a short short fic and I'm still wailing internally over how Carey doesn't even know how much PK loves him YOU DUMB INSECURE COWBOY WHO COULD FAIL TO LOVE THAT FACE.

dress up and coloring... a lot of coloring, by katarin
Carey is jealous. Of PK's devotion to a pair of little girls. I DIE INSIDE.

In conclusion Carey Price is a stupid dimpled prince of a cowboy and people should make terrible youtube slideshows about how much he loves PK Subban set to Taylor Swift and Shania Twain. GO.

Much like with White Collar, there is ONLY ONE CORRECT SHIP for Vikings and it is Ragnar/Lagertha/Athelstan and if you ship Ragnar/Athelstan without Lagertha you are WRONG AND A BAD PERSON OK. LAGERTHA BEST.

Cunningly Carved Upon Me, by [livejournal.com profile] randomeliza
The one where Ragnar doesn't invade England so much as get washed up on the shore and is nursed back to health by Athelstan in the monastery. (Spoiler alert: of course Lagertha shows up with a horde of Vikings at her back to break him out. LAGERTHA BEST.)

On Earth as It Is in Heaven, by [livejournal.com profile] samyazaz
Soulmates AU! There is also a very good fill to this same prompt by [livejournal.com profile] lady_ragnell but that's ok because my favorite Vikings fic by her is...

I Bet A Lot Of Folks Can Sing In Harmony, by [livejournal.com profile] lady_ragnell
THE BAND AU.

Wash the Echoes Out, by [livejournal.com profile] eleanor_lavish
Ragnar and Lagertha find out something terrible about Athelstan's past, and go on a quest for revenge. I actually think my favorite part is Ragnar's inability to really understand why Athelstan reacts to things the way he does. Their cultural differences are nicely handled, I thought. (Trigger warning for mentions of child abuse.)

and my darkness falls, by [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Ahahahaha BABYSITTER AU yeah that's right.

PS I've been listening to the new album CHVRCHES have streaming on their website pretty much non-stop for two days you should check it out.
