*I am told that it is a mark of growth as a writer if your old writings make you cringe. So that's a good sign, I suppose. Fics marked with WARNING: OLD were written in high school, and frankly are kind of awful, but the ones included here for some reason have sentimental value to me, such that I didn't want to leave them out. There are others that I'm pretending don't exist.

(my hands are totally instruments of God.)

I'm just going to put this here until I figure out how to better use it: writing aids and standards collected by our holy mother of webzines, [livejournal.com profile] bb_shousetsu. guys... English is the worst. I know. I know, okay? I know that being a native speaker and lifelong avid reader with a thorough knowledge of Latin and a less-thorough but still present knowledge of ancient Greek gives me a leg up in the grammatical sweepstakes. but when I kick and scream and throw tantrums about how people don't know how to use commas, it's not for my own entertainment. grammar is important. language only helps us communicate when we're using the same one. commas and apostrophes and sentence fragments may seem insignificant, but they affect whether what you mean in your head is understood by the person who reads your words. think about it.

ok, flist, help me out here. who all is doing [livejournal.com profile] valentinesplay and [livejournal.com profile] footie_bang? I'm probably doing the latter (FINISHING SOULBONDING THIS TIME I FUCKING SWEAR), on the fence about the former. I kind of like to know what I'm getting into with fic exchanges, don't want to jump into a shark tank of angry madridistas, etc. but I like writing to spec and 500 words is totally doable, if that really is all that's expected, so...

should I sign up, yea or nay? bearing in mind that I've got all of [livejournal.com profile] cornerflag to edit by next week and I'm still failing at betaing for bigbang. (sorry I suck so hard, [livejournal.com profile] mardia. :( I swear I'll get it done!) and, uh, school, but it's not like rl responsibilities have ever stopped me before.

someone call the exorcist, this damn thing took on a life of its own. sorry for my abject failure at keeping this up during Hanukkah, but it's done now? just in time for me to start flailing over [livejournal.com profile] cornerflag, hurrah!

title: morning comes in paradise
fandom: Football RPF
pairing: Victor Valdes/Andres Iniesta
rating: PG-13
word count: 4000
summary: In which puberty hits Andres like a freight train, and Victor is an innocent victim of the collision.
notes: This was originally supposed to be a Hanukkah present for [livejournal.com profile] ibuyu, so whenever you come back, here it is, sweetie! It's not exactly the story I wanted to write, but the further I got into it, the more I realized that while that story would make the characters happier, it would also make them assholes. And I couldn't do that, in the end. An infinite number of thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette and especially [livejournal.com profile] mardia for helping me figure out how the final compromise between what I wanted and what the characters would do should go! And who knows, maybe someday I will write the outtakes in which Andres wages a lolita-esque campaign of seduction and breaks Victor's resistance to his sweet-natured wiles. For now, I've had more than enough of teenage whining. XD

if there's anything to say, if there's anything to do, if there's any other way: I'd do anything for you )

and then I said I wasn't going to continue with it? um, well, I was procrastinating again, so... (I'm still not going to finish this! and it is still AU of what properly happens in the soulbonding 'verse! and someday, god willing, I may finish that damn fic and the thing I was supposed to write for Hanukkah and the Baby Dream Team soulbonding thing I really wanted to write for [livejournal.com profile] stickmarionette for yuletide before being made of fail stymied me! but today is not that day.)

I only needed one. and here it is. Indecorous. (ironically I was looking for fic of the movies, not the BBC series, because I love the actress who plays Mary Watson in the movies so much, she was the greatest Caroline Bingley ever, but there you have it.) it is so refreshing to read a fic where John doesn't magically cure Sherlock of being Sherlock with his magical cock. that's not the way it works.

I happened to stumble across [livejournal.com profile] triedunture's Jeeves and Wooster fic last night, which sent me off into veritable paroxysms of joy, and therefore I am duly passing the recommendation on to you. thoroughly delightful, just like the original! I should investigate what marvels [livejournal.com profile] yuletide has presented us on that front this year, now that I think of it.

the third and last fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! I always have this fantasy I'm going to be super-productive and write tons of fic, but I think three is pretty much the level of involvement I'm capable of. probably none of you read this on the archive because nobody but me is into Hart of Dixie but you all should watch it, because it is super adorable! and available on Hulu!

title: you are cordially invited
fandom: Hart of Dixie
pairing: Zoe Hart/Wade Kinsella
rating: PG
word count: 1594
summary: "If only I'd known when I was applying to medical school that my mother was right and it would only matter if I managed to find a man to marry me!" Zoe raged. "I'm a woman past thirty-five and I'm not married, I must not be a real doctor! Clearly my years of study and medical practice mean nothing compared to my good repute as a qualification to actually practice medicine in this stupid town!"
notes: The wedding invitation template is from here and the words of the wedding ceremony are from here. They're probably not exactly right for a secular wedding in Alabama but oh well!

'Lavon!' Zoe yelled, stomping into the kitchen in her not-exactly-sensible heels. 'LA-VON!' )

title: una loba en la bañera
fandom: Football RPF
pairing: Mesut Özil/Sami Khedira
rating: PG-13
word count: 1407
summary: (224): They only knew me as the lesbian that passed out in a bathtub. That's not what you call friendship.
notes: I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the authorship of this one was not a big secret, either. Let it be known that pretty much NOTHING except my love for [livejournal.com profile] distira could have gotten me to write Madrid fic! But she wrote me my darlings as lacrosse players at a girls' boarding school, so I figure the least I could do is write her darlings as a lesbian roller derby team.

'It wasn't even that bad,' Nuri said. 'C'mon, you know Ramos doesn't give a shit, she blacked out at the last afterparty and made out with, like, half the team. There's still photos of her licking Cris tagged on Facebook. And she's straight. All you did was pass out in her bathtub.' )

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide reveal, part the first!

title: it takes a village
fandom: Temeraire (Naomi Novik)
pairing: Laurence/Tharkay
rating: G
word count: 2871
summary: Rescuing that baby from the burning house was only the beginning of Laurence's troubles. And, of course, Tharkay's.
notes: To the surprise of ABSOLUTELY NOBODY who follows me on twitter, the babyfic was by me. This was an expansion/revision of an idea [livejournal.com profile] novembersmith and I once riffed upon here yea these many years ago, and I am unspeakably grateful that she gave me the okay to use it as the springboard for this fic! And also for her beta services. And to [livejournal.com profile] mardia, [livejournal.com profile] aramley, and [livejournal.com profile] t_lyrical for beta-ing and hand-holding, and [livejournal.com profile] laura47 for hosting yuletide parties and telling me I should just write the babyfic if I wanted to. Basically I needed a lot of help. Thank you, everybody!

'Laurence,' Tharkay asked, with absolutely no inflection, 'is that a baby?' )

hey guys! obviously failing at the whole "write things for Hanukkah" project, w/evs, I'll get it done. scout's honor! Christmas threw a major spanner in my cunning plan to celebrate my Jewish heritage, who would have imagined.

but, more important than my personal failings: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide happened! and I got not one but two awesome stories, which you should all read if you haven't yet! (and LEAVE FEEDBACK, don't think I haven't noticed the general slackness on this front since we moved to the AO3.) so. THANK YOU, SECRET (and, uh, not-so-secret, you know who you are) SANTAS! ♥

for my part, I managed to get three stories in before deadline, but they are all very, very obviously by me, so you get no bonus points for guessing before reveals go up. XD

let's see, what else. the [livejournal.com profile] footballslash holiday exchange has also gone live; I didn't participate myself except for a little beta-work on the side but I've glanced through and there's some lovely stuff to be found, if for some inexplicable reason you are short of things to read! and [livejournal.com profile] distira wrote me some SUPER ADORABLE snippets of Victor/Andres as genderswapped lacrosse players, which everybody should read for obvious reasons. SO ADORABLE, I CAN'T. I don't have enough for a proper recs update but that should keep you all in fic until then. (ETA: I am just rolling in the riches here! cuter than cute snippet of Alcantaras by [livejournal.com profile] dreamofthem for all our delectation. :D)

happy holidays to those who celebrate, hope those who don't are having an awesome time anyway just being their awesome selves!

( Nov. 27th, 2011 07:52 pm)
thanksgiving break is never long enough and as per usual I didn't get any work done, w/e w/e I do what I want. and what I want is to procrastinate until the very last possible moment.

anyway. this is kind of random but I was wondering, would anyone like a post about my ~methods of reccing? that sounds super pretentious and obnoxious and probably nobody is at all interested, but I also realize that I have followers who are here for the recs and nothing else and idk, maybe some of you would like to know where I get the stuff on the list so you don't have to wait for my next extremely delayed due to exigencies of graduate school update? (and of course there are always the people who think it's a big clique-y circle jerk but let's face it, I could explain my system until I was blue in the face and they'd still think I just recced everything because my friends wrote it. am I still slightly peeved that my objectivity was called into question? why yes, now that you mention it!)

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide [livejournal.com profile] yuletide [livejournal.com profile] yuletide etc, not even going to try to start [livejournal.com profile] cornerflag until that's all over. probably forgetting something, remind me if you know what it is!

sign-ups close tonight at 8PM so don't forget to get that finished if you want to officially participate! but I also wanted to add that if for whatever reason you can't sign up and do the whole shebang this year, you can still participate in other ways and you totally should! there is, of course, the ever-popular "read all the stories on Christmas morning and leave comments for all the hard-working authors" method of participation, and seriously, LEAVE COMMENTS, AUTHORS ARE A NERVOUS BUNCH, but there's also some stuff you can do before Christmas, should you unexpectedly have some time on your hands. sign up for the pinch-hitters list - you never know what awesome and inspiring request will go out over the list! browse the Dear Yulegoat letters and see what you might like to write as an extra treat! (corollary: if you are an official participant in this year's yuletide, leave a link to your Dear Yulegoat letter in the post on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. you never know who will be browsing, looking for something to write.) offer to beta! make yourself available to your friends for the obligatory wailing and gnashing of teeth when assignments are sent out! everybody can help make the yuletide gay.

IS IT YULETIDE YET?

PS: so who else is crazy nervous? can't wait for assignments!
