creeps in this petty pace from day to day! ...what?

Hmm, see, I wasn't surprised Laurence wasn't ecstatic. Baby steps, in my opinion. I was pretty pleased that he realized that it wasn't the end of the world--that there is a life after committing treason, that he still has honor left and it's up to him to decide what that means (THARKAY ILU BTW). I think he has a whole lot of thinking and brooding to do, to try to discover who he is now. Most of VoE was just that--him not knowing who he is, not being able to reconcile being a traitor with still being alive. He's not going to resolve anything overnight. Which is what makes the long voyage across several oceans so very appealing, especially since he has Temeraire with him, to say nothing, of course, of Tharkay and Granby. And even Riley, if he pulls himself together. (CHRIST, BUCK UP, DUDE, I MISS YOUR RANTY RACIST, TERRIBLE FACE! Man, he's such the epitome of the times, but ILHIM.)

And yeah, I definitely get the impression that Laurence and Temeraire are unusually close, but I think Lily and Catherine are perhaps borderline on that level of closeness too--Lily is certainly extremely intelligent and very much involved in her captain's life--grant you, her relationship with Riley didn't go so well. But then, see above. Riley was probably, uh, not the best choice to try that with. Choiseul, if he hadn't been a filthy rotten traitor, might have worked out better. I think either way a dragon's captain is pretty much completely invested in his or her dragon, to the point that marriage is an alarming proposal. And, um, sometimes my mind totally goes to the Laurence/Temeraire place, which I CANNOT BE BLAMED FOR IF NAOMI INSISTS UPON WRITING THEM LIKE A REGENCY ROMANTIC COUPLE. His dream is to have a little house with a garden big enough for Temeraire to lie in! *SWOON* Only, you know, the mechanics are a bit sketchy, so for the most part I let that one lie. *glares plot bunnies into submission*

But I guess for me that was never really an obstacle in Laurence having a relationship, as long as Temeraire was still involved--NOT LIKE THAT, CHRIST. Which is one of the reasons I like L/G, since Granby's already served on his crew and they have a bond together. The same applies to Tharkay, actually. Plus, I like to think Temeraire and Tharkay have random conversations now and again about their respective travels, IDK. Personal canon, I guess.

Oooh, I never really looked at Tharkay/Granby like that before, and that is entirely fascinating. One of my favorite ways to look at my OT3, actually, is as three captains with two dragons--it just never occurred to me to take Temeraire and Laurence out of the equation. I think it could probably work pretty well either way, but I do prefer the threesome, which, uh. You may have noticed. Plus, Temeraire and Iskierka, as much as I guess some fans dislike it, do have a bond, and I think as they both grow older they'll continue to squabble, but... you know, I think Temeraire will be very glad to have Iskierka along with them, in the end. As for Iskierka herself... man, what a mess. I absolutely adore her as a character, despite all the crazy shenanigans she's been pulling, and I keep hoping she'll settle down at least somewhat--she clearly needs more of Jane's influence (ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES EVER WAS HER MEETING BB!ISKIERKA IN ALL HER UNIFORMED FINERY! UNFF. *fans self*). But hmm, for me, I never saw Iskierka as a daughter figure for Granby. I guess I just don't like the idea of seeing the dragons as children--she acts very childish, yeah, but to me it comes off more as, I don't know, some crazy diva opera singer? HEE, WITH GRANBY AS HER HAPLESS ASSISTANT. ...sorry, I... I just spew cracky ideas everywhere. Um. Ignore that.

What I love about Laurence and Tharkay, actually, is that they're both outsiders--and Granby sort of joins their ranks once Iskierka gets older and more unruly, and he starts going against the grain of normalized Corps behavior, too. Don't get me wrong, I really, really love Laurence/Roland, and just wrote some girl!Laurence femmeslash commentfic with her. Mmmm. But in the end I have a huge soft spot for L/T/G, and even if Granby hadn't wound up on the boat with them at the end of VoE, I'd probably have written an AU where he did, because I am crazy like that. :)
