i always feel so heartbroken for anyone that cries after they lose in a major tournament like that, even if they're losing to us. EXTRA killer if they're adorable and look really sweet like aya, ugh. she's like a puppy, i want to hug her. and YES i had totally spaced out and forgotten that incident with hope vs shitty home fans. ngl you just made me REALLY want to write that. i'll have to do some research, but HOLD ME TO THAT ONE.
i definitely feel you re: second-hand embarrassment with japanese interviews. and also game shows. wps era videos are few and far between except for match highlights, but there's a quick background thingy on the washington freedom on their youtube channel that's pretty interesting if you skip through all the dudes in suit talks and watch the player introductions and interviews. and they did a seed spitting contest once that never fails to make me chuckle and gives a good idea of what a weird mashup of players they were - i'm not sure how familiar you are with the usa ladies, but in that video there's abby, her current partner sarah huffman who has been in and out of the senior team pool over the years, one of hope's backup gks ashlyn harris, current defender becky sauerbrunn, and past defender cat reddick/whitehill. ali krieger and lori lindsey have played with the freedom (lori in both the wps and wusa), as well as internationals erin mcleod, sawa, sonia bompasto, and lisa de vanna. that was really just an excuse to reminisce about that team being a big bag of awesome.
and oh man, the abby v hope kerfuffle. i'm so glad i'm a relatively new fan and got attached to abby before i read the love/hate facepalm rollercoaster that was abby references in hope's book and got more than vague references to 2007. i'm solidly in camp hope on that front, definitely, and i'm really glad that abby seems to have gotten over herself and that they provide me moments like this now. AND THIS. I STILL HAVE NO WORDS FOR THIS. to be honest though, a lot of my abby love feelings are spawned by her relationship with alex morgan. sneak attack hugs! head pats! alex jumpsonher a lot. sometimes they hold hands. and they just generally have nothing but absolute praise for each other - alex fangirls abby's goal records and abby can't wait for alex to break said goal records (this interview is just really good in general, i definitely recommend it). just the whole mentor/protégée relationship, passing the torch, etc. thing makes me want to curl up into a ball made entirely of feelings. i should just do a primer one day, but then that would involve being coherent.
(i think i officially win the most embarrassing comment award.)
