More accurately my beloved aramley sat me down when I visited over Thanksgiving and showed me a series of youtube videos with the stated intention of tripping me so I'd fall down the kpop hole, but it's all good, we're having a great time down here! I'm contemplating the ideal sequence of videos with which to spread the kpop brain infection to others, but in the meantime, I really need to compile a list of fics that I want to be able to find again, so here we are. Maybe these will tempt you to also get incredibly invested in the singing and dancing career of a bunch of infants? We'll see!

can you kiss me more? by werelino (Seungmin/Minho): I don't even like university AUs but the relationship conflict in this one is just DEVASTATING and legitimately made me cry, two thumbs up.

Amongst the Flock by Mntsnflrs (Minho/Jisung): for that special moment when you're in the mood for some bananapants whump in which boys cry and their boyfriends go feral, please enjoy this completely over-the-top AU in which depressed shut-in rich boy Jisung falls in love with the bodyguard his abusive mother has hired to watch him. this is technically the second story in the series but I highly recommend starting here, then doubling back to read the Chan/Felix story that precedes it and continuing on to the Changbin/Hyunjin story afterward.

heaven calling in the distance by chajatta (Chan/Felix): really fun urban fantasy AU in which Felix (a sun elf) gets set up with Chan (a werewolf). definitely definitely read the second fic in the series as well!

oh, you kissed me just to kiss me by natigail (Minho/Jisung): REALLY fascinating sex work AU; Jisung, an anxious touch-starved asexual, hires Minho to cuddle him.

marginal, hereditary by harrowsong (Changbin/Hyunjin): space AU! also omegaverse! one of the most creative concepts I've ever read, and also REALLY adorable.

cross my mind by noonwitching (Chan/Felix): alternate universe where Chan washed out of idol training and doesn't quite realize how much the psychological scarring is still affecting him until he's trying to define his relationship with Felix, even to himself.

on the road to divorce by meloncafe (Seungmin/Minho): Minho sends Seungmin divorce papers, so he shows up at Minho's door to try to win him back.

now I got you in my space by LetMeDown (Chan/Felix): this is genuinely just 45k of a/b/o universe mutual pining while fucking through Felix's heat so like. please know going in that there is zero trope subversion, it's exactly what it says on the tin, but frankly it's a pretty good translation of the extremely vanilla normcore "picket fence and a dog" vibes that Chan and Felix give off in real life and it's very sweet!

the book of us: electricity by orphan_account (Seungmin/Hyunjin): look I don't really read many high school AUs so when I say that this one transformed my brain chemistry, trust me, I mean it.

hand over hand by afterthedisco (Seungmin/Minho): Seungmin has a lot of issues, and Minho falls in love with him anyway. (warning for disordered eating and what I would consider to be self-harm through excessive exercise)

LMCat_98 has joined the chat by foxiyeny (Minho/Jisung): minsung sex work AU 2: electric boogaloo! Minho is a camboy and Jisung wins a giveaway for a private stream

puppy love by hyunnies (Seungmin/Hyunjin, eventual Seungmin/Jeongin/Hyunjin): puppy play: the fic. that's it! Hyunjin is mean in an extremely loving way and it's overall just super soft. (you may need the context that the Stray Kids all have officially designated animalsonas and Seungmin's is a puppy.)

back to my heart by gorgonforhire (Minho/Jisung): exes Minho and Jisung run into each other at a party and immediately pick up where they left off. extremely soft bondage, yay!

ksm, virgo disaster by werelino (Seungmin/Minho): short and truly adorable college AU in which Seungmin is determined not to date Minho until he's closer to his best self (and Minho, obviously, thinks his current self is more than good enough)

we're so lucky by anoymous (Changbin/Hyunjin): omegaverse where Hyunjin is pregnant with Changbin's baby, played completely straight: NONE of this is anything I'm especially into, but this fic is so good and so funny and Changbin is absolutely pitch-perfect as the adoring dad-to-be going along with Hyunjin's every whim

here by me by skzinger (Minho/Jisung): Minho, Jisung's emergency contact, gets a terrifying phone call summoning him to the hospital after a bad accident. this is LONG and satisfyingly soapy, and the slow reveal of what happened to cause the catastrophic break-up before the beginning of the story is really well done.

the blood on your lies by inkin_brushes (Chan/Felix, Minho/Jeongin, Changbin/Seungmin, Hyunjin/Jisung): incredibly long and incredibly dramatic gang AU that perfectly scratches the itch for a soapy good time; the platonic devotion between Felix and Hyunjin is worth the price of admission completely on its own

we have to keep trying by ockleibi (Changbin/Hyunjin): screamingly funny and very sweet story set in the regular non-mpreg world where Hyunjin abruptly and inexplicably gets obsessed with trying to get Changbin pregnant

Multistable Perception by scheherazaade (Seungmin/Minho): this story makes me want to SCREAM, I read it four times in a single day. a masterwork in limited perspective! (you may require the context that Minho and Seungmin's on-camera relationship concept is "divorced".)

break in case of emergency by martyrsdaughter (Minho/Jisung): slight scifi AU where Minho is a bodyguard instead of being in Stray Kids and he's telepathically bonded to Jisung to help him manage his anxiety.

i'll wait for you, my sweet by chajatta (Changbin/Hyunjin): Changbin takes Hyunjin to get his fortune told. this read on the conflict between Hyunjin wanting to be open to love and being scared of getting hurt again by being vulnerable absolutely opened my third eye!

Just look at me, baby by AlphabetMinusQ (Minho/Jisung): a really interesting take on being idols in an a/b/o universe and not matching gender stereotypes, maybe a bit less polished but I enjoyed it!

merry christmas, 자기야 by bulletbulletbullet (Chan/Young K): Chan is now the super-responsible leader of Stray Kids but once upon a time he was the cute beloved baby of a bunch of older idols-in-training at his company including Brian Kang aka Young K and sometimes! it's just nice! to think about him getting spoiled by someone who loves him and wants him to have nice things!

at the end of the maze (find me) by firemblem (Changbin/Hyunjin): I will admit to being biased but the contrast between Changbin's constant flirting with Hyunjin on-camera and Hyunjin's frankly irrational insecurity makes me insane, and I feel like this fic gets that better than most! watch the clips in the author's note for fun additional context.

cracks by Anonymous (Chan/Felix): Felix develops an eating disorder and none of the other kids really knows what to do or how to help; very heavy but also cathartic.

push through, break through by sunnyskies (cassiopeihwa) (Seungmin/Minho): Minho discovers that Seungmin doesn't know how to finger himself and decides to remedy the situation.

strike gently by cryptonomica (Hyunjin/Jeongin): Jeongin feels awkward about not having had his first kiss yet, and Hyunjin offers to help him out.

split seam by tandembike (Seungmin/Minho): Seungmin and Minho are dating, but they seem to have radically different ideas about how committed Minho is to the whole thing. SUCH good pangs!

He Loves Me Not by nuttinonice (Chan/Felix): Chan forgets an important date and makes Felix cry :( which then makes Chan cry! this fandom is so good if you enjoy crying!

Whatever Else by Mntsnflrs (Minho/Jisung): the first time Jisung has sex goes badly. Minho tries to give him a better experience. the confession scene is incredible and makes me want to howl at the moon!

rare devotion by gorgonforhire, thereisnoreality (Changbin/Hyunjin): the eternal stalemate of Hyunjin going out of his mind because he wants to be loved versus Changbin trying and failing to make him believe that he does love him already. this is technically the sequel to a story about Hyunjin hooking up with Minho and Felix but I think you could get everything you need from context clues if that doesn't sound appealing.

waiting for us by dandyboy (smartlove) (Seungmin/Jeongin): Seungmin keeps writing songs about Jeongin, and Jeongin has no idea.

Maybe New York by eternal_octopus (Jisung/Hyunjin): Hyunjin and Jisung start hooking up on tour, and Jisung isn't sure what it will mean for their relationship when they go home.

count on me by kamsangi (Chan/Young K): accidental sugar baby Chan is such a good concept, two enthusiastic thumbs up.

can't read your mind (can read your playlists) by MindelanWolf (Changbin/Chan): EXTREMELY cute story about Changbin monitoring Chan's emotional state via the medium of Chan's Spotify activity

April 10th by MindelanWolf (Seungmin/Minho): possibly the only "Minho fell first" story I've ever read, but while I was reading, I was convinced! also, this fic is correct and grocery shopping together is the absolute pinnacle of romance. (the previous story in the series is Chan/Felix and also very cute!)

you should be (loving someone) by sharpa (Chan/Felix): really lovely and somewhat melancholy story about Chan and Felix deciding not to be together in the present day, but still trying to reassure each other that they're committed to an indefinite future where they can be.

all the ways you say my name by hyvnin (Minho/Hyunjin): the most delightful pangs always come from two people trying to express their love in a form the other one doesn't understand! the confession scene is perfect.

maximum accident by martyrsdaughter (Chan/Felix): FAKE DATING FAKE DATING FAKE DATING

i love you, i love you, i love you by ockleibi (Changbin/Hyunjin): ockleibi just GETS this ship, the perfect push-pull between Hyunjin's ever-changing needs and Changbin's steady willingness to meet him wherever he is, without making it heavy at all

Little Beast by realfriends (Chan/Felix): Felix starts wearing skirts occasionally and Chan's guilt complex about being attracted to him goes into overdrive

roses by gorgonforhire (Changbin/Hyunjin): set in a nebulous post-Stray Kids future where they've mostly finished their military service, Changbin hooks up with Hyunjin and then Hyunjin stops talking to him. So much of the dynamic for this ship is based on the game they're always playing in public where Changbin chases and Hyunjin runs away, and I really appreciate this story for asking what would happen if Hyunjin ever hurt Changbin for real.

feel the light by thereisnoreality (Chan/Seungmin): AU where Chan is older and became a producer instead of an idol, and the rest of the group wasn't as successful without him; Seungmin is recording a solo album, Chan is working with him on it, and the lure of a sexy older man is just so irresistible

make this house a home by thereisnoreality (Changbin/Hyunjin): ok so for context in 2024 Hyunjin and Changbin moved into an apartment together and promptly started publicly referring to each other as "wife" and I'm a little obsessed with it, and this series is a delightful exploration of all that domestic wife-ness

Pro Re Nata by theproblematique (OT8): DO NOT click on this unless you're down with some pretty nasty omegaverse shenanigans, but tragically I am into the nasty omegaverse shenanigans and Chan as the lone omega in an otherwise all-alpha pack who DESPERATELY wants to be passed around like a party favor yet is cockblocking himself because he can't bring himself to express any personal desires is so tasty to me

Yes, Please!

-Happiness. I want everybody to be happy or at least not overtly miserable at the end of the fic. They can suffer and be angsty in the beginning or middle but please please please let the ending be sunshine and rainbows or the promise of sunshine and rainbows on the not-too-distant horizon. I'm also happy to get a fic that's 100% fluffy sunshine and rainbows all the way through.

-Characters having lots of feelings about each other. I'm a big fan of tropes where characters have a lot of history between them -- friends to lovers, childhood sweethearts, best frenemies, sibling relationships, etc. I'm not a big fan of porn for porn's sake but if you want to write about people expressing their feelings via sex, that's great! If you don't want to write shipfic, something focusing on friendship or family bonds is great too.

-Gen, het, slash, femslash and poly (including poly relationships where A is romantically involved with both B and C but B and C are not romantically interested in each other) are all good with me.

-tropes and cliches (if you want to write "snowed in at the hotel and there's ONLY ONE BED", sedoretu, unexpected baby acquisition, genderswap, somebody inexplicably has wings, etc., but are worried that it wasn't specifically prompted, please know that I love that kind of stuff and follow where your muse leads you -- only exceptions are I'm not too keen on soulmarks and A/B/O when they're done straight)

The Untamed: Vid Recs Edition

I have now watched The Untamed all the way through (and I'm even rewatching it with tabacoychanel! thanks for tolerating the way I yell every time Dimples appears onscreen, mi amor!) so I'm ready to make some additions to my initial recommendations. I remain deeply invested in Sunshine getting a happy ending, Grumpy's tragic adoration of him, and their son being a Very Good Boy, but now I'm also ready to cut someone on behalf of Wen Ning, furious about EVERY SINGLE DEAD LADY, and fully on Meng Yao's side for a solid, like 50% of the murders he committed. Maybe up to 75%. That one tumblr post about how his descent into the dark side is completely understandable for anyone who's worked in customer service? Yeah. Just! Appreciate! His! Work! And! Let! Him! Hold! The! Baby!

I'm also really excited because now I understand the vids!!!! Some of my favorites so far:

a love that won't sit still - lovely and mostly linear, so it's easy to follow. Stray Italian Greyhound is a popular song for vids but it really is perfect for Lan Wangji.

NFWMB - iconic!!!! I loved this even before I watched the show, but man, "give your heart and soul to charity" sure hits differently when you know what Wei Wuxian is about to give to Jiang Cheng.

Heaven - not even remotely linear but if you want to scream about how Lan Wangji loves Wei Wuxian so much that he had to realign his entire worldview, watch this vid and then come back and I'll join you.

Daylight - for whatever reason most of the vids I've seen are Lan Wangji-centric but this one is all about Wei Wuxian and I feel like it really captures something fundamental about his character. He's been through a lot but he keeps smiling. (And also, he loves Lan Wangji.)

The Phoenix & the Ash - a darker (but still ultimately optimistic) look at Wei Wuxian's character arc. Unlike the previous vid, not really filtered through a romantic lens. (I mean, Lan Wangji is definitely still there, it's just not about him or Wei Wuxian's feelings for him.)

True Love - set during their teenage pre-death years so it's more cute than harrowing. Truly, baby Lan Wangji was so mad about having a crush.

Death By A Thousand Cuts - by contrast, extremely harrowing! Lan Wangji has to say goodbye to Wei Wuxian so many times and it's causing me emotional distress! The fast cuts over the bridge are so good, though, I keep rewatching even though I know it's going to hurt me.

make it holy - I just! Love Meng Yao!! So much!!! Ugh, he loves Lan Xichen and it doesn't redeem him but he really does. Gorgeous and agonizing.

if we live to see the other side of this - speaking of agonizing! The character study of Wei Wuxian and Meng Yao's parallel arcs that we deserve. There are so many amazing moments but "now you see me, now you don't" on that iconic "Wei Wuxian!" scene, followed by "now you say you love me, pretty soon you won't" and the blood spreading across the floor after Meng Yao executed the Wen civilians... damn. (That final half-verse recap with Nie Huaisang: DAMN.)

Nothing In This World I Wouldn't Do - is this vid perfect? No. Some of the long clips are just too long, the transitions especially could use work, and the fadeouts in the first few seconds are unfortunate. But if you have any feelings about siblings in The Untamed, you should stick with it, because wow, this vid is a real kick in the heart. That long shot of Nie Huaisang bowing on "nothing in this world I wouldn't do" gets me every single time.

Sharp-Dressed Men - and this one is just plain fun. The costumes are so pretty! For both the ladies and the gents, title notwithstanding.

Hold On, I'm Coming - Lan Wangji protec, he attac, and most importantly: he loves his boyfriend very much and wants to pamper him and keep him safe forever. The slow intro sequence of Lan Zhan's many faces of being desperately in love and completely feral with it because he wants to protect Wei Ying and can't is incredible, and the motion and cuts once the bass kicks in... phew.

Ready For It - will I ever not be screaming into the abyss about my feelings regarding Meng Yao? Unclear, but either way, that day is not today. The comparisons this vid sets up about his relationships with Nei Mingjue and Lan Xichen (and his dad, I guess, I just don't care about Jin Guangshan) are breathtaking. I'm ready to die on the "Meng Yao genuinely loved Nie Mingjue and felt just as betrayed by Nie Mingjue not taking his side when he murdered a Nie soldier as Nie Mingjue did by the whole murder thing" hill so the first time the tonal shift of the "in my dreams" chorus hits is... oof.

The Crooked Wens - it's always a great day to sob your eyes out over Wen Ning! I love the slow build of this vid. A beautiful, introspective tribute to Wen Ning and Wen Qing and their heritage, and then their legacy.

For lack of a better system, I'm still adding fic recs to my first Untamed post, but I may do another one for rare pairs later. It's been a long time since I was so deep in fandom hell, but so far I'm enjoying it! If you wish to be dragged in as well, I will happily hand-select you a sample platter of fanworks before you decide whether you want to invest in 50 episodes of television. The Untamed: Wangxian Fic Recs Edition

Hi friends! It has been... a while. (Significantly longer if you don't count "Dear Yulegoat" letters.) I'm doing okay; I've been working from home for the past seven weeks and nobody in my family is sick. It's lonely, I want to hang out with my friends, I hate conference calls, I don't like being cooped up with my younger brother nonstop and I miss hugs. I'm grateful that that's as much as I can complain about.

My attention span has been absolutely shot (not that it was much to write home about before) and I've been having some trouble sticking with books -- unfortunately, since this is my big chance to read through my absolutely massive TBR pile! I did get my paws on advance copies of the upcoming Cat Sebastian, Sarah Rees Brennan, and Naomi Novik books, all of which I managed to get into and thoroughly enjoyed. But mostly I just keep taking books off the shelf, reading the first page, and putting them back down again. It feels like my best coping mechanism has been taken away from me.

At this psychologically delicate moment, as you can probably tell, I decided that it was time to try reading some fanfic for this Chinese costume drama all my friends were yelling about. In the spirit of experimentation, I went through the entirety of the Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian pairing tag (Complete, English, Words > 10000) without having seen the show and documented my "safe to enjoy without any canon knowledge" recs. Incredibly (at least to me, since I don't think I've managed to watch 50 episodes of anything since college) I did eventually watch The Untamed and I kept adding things to the post here, so the Dreamwidth version got some significant structural changes but the original "no canon, no problem" version is still up on tumblr if you want it!

Anyway, without further ado, have a bunch of fic recs for The Untamed! I also have a vid rec post, and I'll do a rarepair post as soon as I have time.

The Simplest Way Forward - they're student musicians in the same orchestra who get green card married so that they can adopt the kid who gets ditched at Wei Wuxian's door; I know everyone has recced this fic already but on the off chance that you haven't read it already, YES, it's that good
Window Shopping - they're quarantined in apartments opposite each other and A-Yuan wants to see Lan Wangji's pet rabbits. My Year in Music

Hey dreamwidth friends! Long time no post (except for the annual "Dear Yulegoat" letter), but I come bearing gifts, so please excuse the intrusion.

I may be the last person on the internet who still listens to CDs and creates playlists using .mp3s rather than Spotify, but you'll pry my iPod Shuffle out of my cold dead hands (it is over five years old and still works! it goes for days without being charged! it clips onto my clothes! there are no ads between songs!) so that's my preferred music consumption method. I make a big mishmash playlist every season of the songs I've gotten into, and it's kind of fun for me to look back at a year's worth of music. Maybe it'll be fun for you, too! My musical taste veers between "I heard this song on a fanvid and I liked it enough to look up the CD," "this is so popular even I've heard of it" and "random shit I found on Noisetrade and downloaded because it had a pretty album cover" so uh, be forewarned.

Yuletide Reveals

Happy New Year, everybody! May we all be healthy and happy and able to afford the books we want to buy in 2018.

Yuletide reveals are up! I received two lovely stories, a character study for Elliot and Luke from In Other Lands and get-together fic for Nate and Charlie (with background Joanna/Holly!) from Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong. I'm still very very slowly reading my way through the collection, but I've also really enjoyed this slow-burn romance for Gavin and Sezin from Integrate (I haven't read the canon but I could figure it out from the fic), this extremely weird epistolary thing about the Vantablack pigment feud, and this political space opera featuring Scipio Africanus and Hannibal of Punic War fame.

supposed to be working. can't focus. big surprise there, oh well.

I've been listening to the live commentary on Wimbledon this past week or so, despite the tragic absence of my beloved Rafa. I've been getting more into women's tennis of late, actually, since my favorite girl is still around while my darling boy is home resting his knees in Mallorca. things that really piss me off: everyone, and I do mean everyone, calling out Dinara Safina as a bad number one for... what? gutting out wins despite the fact that she's playing what she herself would admit is bad tennis? having the humility to acknowledge that Venus and Serena Williams are much better favored than she is to win Wimbledon? she doesn't even like grass, and she's into the semifinals. I was listening to the post-match commentary ragging on the fact that she double-faulted 15 times in her last match, including three straight double faults at 40-love to hand deuce to Sabine Lisicki. you know what they didn't mention? with fifteen double faults and zero aces she managed to win. that game where she double-faulted her way from love to deuce? she won that too. she can play massively under her level and still win. other players have a bad day (including the Williams sisters, come on, how many matches did they win during the clay season) and get knocked out of the tournament. Safina has about five bad days and makes the semifinals. can we give the girl some credit here for having phenomenal potential if she ever manages to hold it together all the way through a final?

ugh, it makes me mad. Dina is so adorable. like a big lanky puppy. and I don't think she's ever had a presser where she didn't get asked a question about her brother. at some point I would totally snap, and she just goes with it: you can really see that she absolutely adores him, despite the fact that he's an even bigger headcase than she is, and it makes me want to give her an enormous hug.

other things that make me mad: people giving Roger Federer a free pass for total douchebaggery (he legit said he was glad his wife, who is nine months pregnant and still does all the supporting in their relationship, wasn't lying around going, "Oh, I'm pregnant, I can't do anything." I mean, his super-cute girlfriend! his adorable brother! his BAMF mom! plus I watched the BBC mini-documentary vidlet thing about his background and the Dunblane school shooting and I was sobbing my eyes out at like seven this morning. holy shit. I did not realize he had that in his life, jesus. I would have loved to see Stan Wawrinka pull it out last night (ok, I got back from lunch and saw that Mandy was down to Stan 4-0 and immediately thought, ok, brb, loling forever) but more for the lols than anything else, really: if Novak can't go all the way, I'm all right with Mandy doing it. just this once. not against Rafa, mind! but if Mandy wins Rafa keeps his No. 1, so. also Mandy says nice things about Rafa, like, all the time, and has an entertaining bitchfest going on with Fed in the media, and really all someone has to do to get on my good side is be nicer to Rafa than Fed is. EVERYBODY BETTER LOVE MY BB OK.

in order to claim a drabble from aramley I must make an offering of my mad writing skillz. (the 'z' makes it ironic!) such is my love for aramley that I will make this sacrifice of my ego and offer myself up upon the altar of public opinion! and stuff.

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing / character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability. (Or don't. I don't really care. These things are like those chain letters we used to do in second grade, honestly.)

any pairing or character I have written before is fair game! (if you aren't sure what I've written before, I do not blame you because I am a fandom slut, but a list of my fic can be found right here. the formatting took a while so do take advantage of the shiny new directory!) at the moment my fannish efforts have mostly been concentrated on Temeraire and tennis RPS, but don't feel obliged at all to stick with them. you can even ask for something I've never written before if you know I'm in the fandom. I really like writing to prompts: go wild!

okay, I'm trying to feel the shiny

right. I am extremely ambivalent about Dreamwidth (not because of the ideology or anything, it seems like a very nice idea and all, I just don't deal so well with change and it's taken me years and years to get my LJ set up the way I like it) but here I am, trying. we'll see how it goes. if you know me on LJ and have a DW, feel free to "grant access" or "subscribe" or both or neither - I think my standard here will be the same as LJ, which is that "grant access" (which appears to be the equivalent of flock?) is reserved for people I know in real life or people from online that I have actually spoken to and have some legit reason to be interested in my personal life of academic woes, and "subscribe" is for both fannish people I am reading and rl people I want to keep up with (as well as fannish people who are kind enough to grant me access to read about their lives). rl babble and academia get locked, fannish things do not. (yes, I have tags and specialized icons for everything. I have a system, okay, don't mock my OCD.)
