YES, EXACTLY. and it's so much worse because we think of them as where we come from so we're always looking for ourselves in their culture, and sometimes I think we're looking so hard that we see things that aren't there. =/ I guess anthropologists are trained to take their own prejudices out of the picture but nobody ever really tells classicists what the secret is.
