plotbunnies for all!
Jan. 5th, 2008 08:54 pmno, seriously - does anybody want them?
I don't think I'm going to write out my Bones bunnies, largely because when I do that I never actually write the fics and I kind of want to get at least one of these written before finals. however, I've been rereading The Will of the Empress (Tamora Pierce, Circle of Magic series) today and I was struck once more by this bunny that's been floating around. some of you have read this book, right?
okay, so, I'm a diehard Tris/Briar shipper. and all the "ew it'd be like kissing my brother" aside, it's always Sandry making that disclaimer about Briar. Tris doesn't really say much at all, aside from the fact that she doesn't date because most men are not like Briar (and are thus jerks who can't get over the fact that she's really smart, pudgy, and easily irritated). I really do think that they could get together and have it work. of course I also think that Sandry and Daja should hook up, but that's a rant for another day.
so, having established that I desperately want there to be well-written (or better yet, canonical) Tris/Briar... I have this monster bunny. and it would be hard to write, because I don't know how it would end, but it could be fun.
to set the scene: Tris is at Lightsbridge studying for her mage's credentials. on weekends she either goes home to Daja's house, or, more and more frequently, to dinner at the palace with Sandry and the Duke. Duke Vedris officially names Sandry as his heir, and she is sent on a tour of all of Emelan to inspect her prospective kingdom and meet her future subjects. She's gone for nearly an entire year. Meanwhile, back in Summersea, Tris is looking after Duke Vedris and helping to run his household, as a favor to Sandry, since she worries that while she's away her uncle will work himself into another heart attack. (I'm working on the assumption that Lightsbridge is located in Summersea, but I can't google my way to verification either way. So I'm going to pretend that Tris is still going to classes and helping out at the palace when she isn't studying, because the curriculum is probably way too easy for her.)
The almost-a-year goes by, and Sandry comes home to find that everything ran pretty smoothly without her, but everyone is behaving a little oddly. Finally she weasels out of the seneschal that while she was gone her uncle acquired a mistress, which makes her go a little o_O;; at first, but she then decides to be supportive and not freak out over the fact that her main parental figure apparently has a sex life. Here's Sandry, being supportive. But she sort of wants to talk to someone about it, so she knocks on Tris' mental door. Tris is busy and kind of snappish (of course, when is she not?) which Sandry is willing to write off to an intense study session, except she gets a quick flash of extremely extracurricular activity while Tris is shutting her out. Now Sandry really needs someone to talk to, because the day Tris is getting laid is a cold one in hell, so off she rides to Daja's house. A very confused and cross-purposed conversation with Daja and Briar later, she figures out that Duke Vedris' mistress is (you guessed it) Tris. Sandry's deferred freak-out ensues.
The turning-point of all this is that Tris and the Duke's relationship is not casual, but not serious either. They were lonely, Tris had had a crush on Vedris for ages, he found himself attracted to her after many intimate dinner conversations and then, after many soul-searching sessions, he let her know. So they're sleeping together, but Tris is definitively not interested in marrying him or being visible at court in any way. Of course everyone knows, but officially she's just a mage who happens to be friends with his great-niece, not his hostess or anything. So Tris is kind of offended by Sandry's freak-out because as far as she sees it, they're two consenting adults, they're not hurting anyone, and they're not going to be screwing up Sandry's inheritance because they're not making babies. What the hell difference does it make that he probably is old enough to be her grandfather? Naturally Sandry doesn't see it in quite that light, and obviously it could be a situation where either Vedris was taking advantage of Tris' inexperience or Tris was taking advantage of his advanced age - it just isn't.
This is the point where I don't really know what happens. Sandry has to be reconciled to Tris and her uncle at some point, and I think either they need to break up before the end or Vedris has to die. (Sorry, Vedris! You're a really cool dude; it's nothing personal!) My main goal is that Tris gains the confidence in herself and her abilities to say a big "fuck you" to all the jerks in magical academia who froze her out for being more powerful than them. She doesn't need to hide who she is or what she can do. Ideally she also gains the confidence in her sexual appeal to finally hook up with Briar. (Assuming we go with the Vedris-dies plot-twist, it could be such an awesome scene! Tris marches into Briar's workshop with a determined air. "Hey Coppercurls, what're you doing here?" "Keeping a promise to a dead man," and then she kisses him breathless. Because I believe that Tris would secretly be a wildcat in bed.)
I should be shot: Y/N?
