that makes me categorically a loser, doesn't it. oh well. at least I'll be a well-rested loser.

anyone want to take bets on the existence of a slideshow of Johnny Weir to t.A.T.u.'s "Malchik Gay" somewhere on Youtube? I kind of don't want to look, because... I want there to be a good vid of Johnny Weir being fabulous and insane set to Malchik Gay. it's perfect for him. (that or Lily Allen's "The Fear", which, until I heard it while thinking of Johnny, I thought was pretty much unviddable. he even has a TV show, it's not like getting source material would be as difficult as it is for, say, tennis.)

did some scattered readings of fandom meta today, which has led me to ponder how the structure of Livejournal itself has so deeply affected the way fandom is constructed and the way fans casually communicate. I see an article about Johnny Weir linked somewhere on my flist and get curious, read a few more articles about Johnny, Tanith Belbin and Evan Lysacek linked from that first one, get more interested by the potential for slash. I ask you guys, because I assume somewhere in the microcosm of the fannish hivemind that is my flist there is someone whose interest has already been piqued by sparkly skaters. equipped with the knowledge provided I go forth, disseminating the links to other members of my flist who ask in turn. and that's the word of mouth, multifannish structure of fannish experience in motion. but it goes further, because now I can also go on delicious or AO3 and go looking for more fic as well; I can look at the journals of authors I like and see who comments on their fic, and if those people write fic as well. if I'm lucky (so far I haven't been) I'll find a manifesto or recs list.

finding fic is a lot like doing academic research. I'm just not sure whether fandom is helping me get better at academia or the other way around.
