crack_van in September and I want to put together a "fandom overview" since nobody's done footie recs there before. their guidelines of what that should include are as follows:
Pics & Bios - thumbnails and a brief introduction to the main characters
Overview - including major plot points/story arcs
Fandom Resources - major archives, recs lists, live journal communities, etc. People are always welcome to leave links for additional archives or personal recs pages in the comments of your overview.
obviously there's no possible way to introduce all the main characters in footie and there's no real "plot" either, so I decided I'd conflate the bios and overview by introducing the major pairings instead (so the pairing introductions will include basic bio and relevant plot arc). some people have contributed to the discussion of what those pairings are already, and some (wonderful, beautiful people) have offered to help! let me know if you are on this list and you don't want to be, and please please please if you're qualified for any of the slots that don't have a writer yet, or know someone else who is, help? all I'm looking for is one paragraph, 300-500 words, and ONE PICTURE. (ETA: if you want an example of roughly what I'm looking for, I posted my own intro to Messi/Villa below. Messi/Villa doesn't have a lot of backstory so some of you may want to write a little more about your pairing, but please please please try to keep it to under 500 words. don't scare off the new fans.) what would you tell someone who'd never heard of football about this pairing so that they could read a fic without undue confusion? this is basically a chance to reach people outside of football fandom and show them how awesome we are. and then - new fans! and hopefully new fic! (but, to make this clear: DON'T JUDGE AND DON'T EVANGELIZE. I have to describe fandom as it is, not how we wish it was. there's a time and a place for pimping the fuck out of your OTP, and if you've got a primer post or know of one tell me, I'm happy to link it! but this is just an introduction for newbies, not a baptism by fire. don't send them into information overload. I don't even get to include my OTP, sulk sulk sulk.)
FOOTBALL (SOCCER) RPF
Introduction
Football fandom is not overwhelmingly large in terms of fic presence, although it's pretty big for a sport. What it is, however, is overwhelmingly disorganized. Team sports provide infinite material for fic, but they also have inherently fractured fandoms; many fans have one club team and one national team and only write (and in some extreme cases only read) about their own team, since one team can easily provide enough material to keep you happy. Essentially, the umbrella of "football RPF" contains dozens of smaller overlapping team fandoms with a near-infinite possibility for crossovers between teams.
