and occasionally I also listen to music

Happy Thanksgiving, people! I am so stuffed, you have no idea, and also I finally gave into this whole Merlin craze and watched the first ep. Is anyone else distressed by the face-off between Giles of BtVS and Gwen of Torchwood? I am distressed. Also, Uther's outfit is doing no favors to his beer gut. Go back to your tweedy librarian ensembles, Giles! You will be considered a sex object by thousands of repressed fantasy-loving young women!
more to come, when I have watched more. however, lest I let this joyous American holiday of food and, uh, more food pass in silence, here, have some music. this is the mix of stuff I'm into right now.
Dream About Flying, Alexi Murdoch
this song is really kind of minimalist - one guy singing and playing the guitar, and the sound quality isn't all that good - but I like it anyway! it's all sad and stuff.
but sometimes when I am sleeping
I still have dreams that I'm flying
Imitosis, Andrew Bird
Andrew Bird is interesting! I like some of his music a lot. this might be my favorite of his songs.
it was anything but hear the voice
that says that we're all basically alone
Fake Palindromes, Andrew Bird
and this song is about... actually I have no idea. dating ads, maybe?
I like long walks and scifi movies
you're six-foot tall and east coast bred
some early night I wanna get together
and I wanna tie your wrists with leather
and drill a tiny hole into your head
Fucking Boyfriend, The Bird and the Bee
ahahaha this song makes me laugh. it's so sweet-sounding, and then...
will you ever be my
will you be my fucking boyfriend?
The Spine Song, Cake Bake Betty
depressing music is so pretty. and depressing! but pretty. I have a disproportionate number of songs about terminal illnesses.
and when I have died
will you use my spine
to swing from tree to tree
in search of places pleasing to the eye?
Cross Bones Style, Cat Power
honestly I mostly don't get what the big deal is about Cat Power. I do like this song, though. it's mellow.
oh come, child
in a cross-bones style
come, child
come and rescue me
We Used To Be Friends, The Dandy Warhols
I cannot make my mind up about the Dandy Warhols. points for the name, of course, and some of their music is a lot of fun. I can't really listen to a whole album all the way through, though. this song was the Veronica Mars title song, but I liked it then and I like it even more as a full song!
a long time ago
we used to be friends
but I haven't thought of you lately at all
Sons and Daughters, The Decemberists
I am so late getting on the Decemberists bandwagon! but I love this song to fucking pieces. there's this bit in the middle where the whole band is singing in canon and harmonizing and there fucking counterpoint and it is AWESOME.
when we arrive, sons and daughters
we'll make our homes on the water
we'll build our walls from aluminum
we'll fill our mouths with cinnamon
now...
Station Approach, Elbow
this is a really beautiful, understated song about going home. I love it a lot.
I never know what I want
but I know when I'm low that I
I need to be with in a town
where they know what I'm like and don't mind
1234, Feist
I am sure that everyone has heard this song by now, but I like it despite the fact that it was played everywhere on the radio.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10
money can't buy you back the love that you had then
Teeth in the Grass, Iron & Wine
Iron & Wine is pretty damn inscrutable, but I feel like the music makes up for the totally bizarre lyrics.
fresh air perfume in your nose
there will be teeth in the grass
Evening on the Ground (Lilith's Song), Iron & Wine
I'm not even going to try. it's really pretty, though.
we were born to fuck each other
one way or the other
Freedom Hangs Like Heaven, Iron & Wine
ain't nobody knows what a newborn holds
but his mama says he'll walk on water and wander back home
I Want To Love You In My Room, Irving
does what it says on the tin!
I want to love you in my room
I want to take off all your clothes
I want to see you in the daytime
I want to see you in my room
Chinese Translation, M. Ward
a pretty, circular narrative song about the big questions in life.
see I once was a young man like you
afraid to do the things I knew I had to do
so I played an escapade just like you
Darling, Please Come Home, Math and Physics Club
trying to get that special someone to come back. sweet, so long as it's not stalkerish.
I love it when the coals burn way down low
I slide up next to you so sweet so slow
I wonder just how far tonight will go
darling won't you please come home
You Are My Joy, The Reindeer Section
aww! I think it's cute.
I won't be there to break your sweet heart
but not being there might break your sweet heart
Pictures of Success, Rilo Kiley
I find it a little creepy that I can relate to a Rilo Kiley song, but uh. normally I'm not this neurotic?
I'm a modern girl
but I fold in half so easily
when I put myself
in the picture of success
Set the Fire to the Third Bar, Snow Patrol
I'm so out of it. is Snow Patrol considered edgy? I have no idea. I think this song is pretty.
your words mostly noises
ghosts with just voices
your words in my memory
are like music to me
Your Ex-Lover Is Dead, Stars
I love songs about awkwardness. I am a very awkward person and it reassures me to know that there are other people who routinely get into these sorts of situations.
and all of that time
you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name
Casimir Pulaski Day, Sufjan Stevens
oh, Sufjan Stevens. songs about girlfriends dying of bone cancer shouldn't be this pretty. or mellow.
Tuesday night at Bible study
we lift our hands and pray over your body
but nothing ever happens
For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti, Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens also needs to learn to write songs with shorter names. but I waive that point. I love the chorus to this song.
if there's anything to say
if there's anything to do
if there's any other way
I'd do anything for you
The Dress Looks Nice On You, Sufjan Stevens
running out of things to say about Sufjan Stevens.
I can see a lot of light in you
I can see a lot of bright in you
and I think the dress looks nice on you
Joy!Joy!Joy!, Sufjan Stevens
last Sufjan Stevens song, I promise! this one's a little more overtly, I don't know, techno-ish, but I think it works pretty well.
I believe in peace
I believe in joy
