vacation lets me fangirl tennis non-stop!
Aug. 14th, 2009 09:51 amwell, sort of. going to the beach today, so may not be able to check tennis scores, but that's probably for the best: I get very nervous during Rafa and Nole's matches. Rafa made it to the quarters, at least, though he's been phenomenally lucky about his quarter imploding, what with Ferrer's knees going all wonky and Petzschner knocking out Querrey and Robredo. he had a terrible quarter to start out with, so I guess karma is evening itself out. JMDP, I like you most of the time, but I hope you're very tired and don't play well. sorry. same to Kim: nobody should ever beat Dina. that's like kicking puppies, you know.
but! but but but!
bronze_ribbons gave me a piece of news that just makes me happy Rafa and Nole exist and play tennis: Rafa and Nole are playing doubles together in Cincinnati! my guess is that Rafa is trying to make up for knocking Nole out of doubles in the first round in Montreal. that said, when was the last time two guys in the top four - or even the top ten, really, unless you count Fed and Stan during the Olympics - decided to play doubles together? especially since Rafa did ask Fed, once upon a time, and Fed said no. (saying no to Rafa is also like kicking puppies, you know. XD) although there's also a hilarious story about Rafa playing doubles with Lleyton Hewitt, when both of them had ridiculous singles matches and were sitting in the locker room about to fall over with exhaustion, and neither of them was willing to throw in the towel and had to be talked out of going out and playing doubles anyway. (Rafa said he loved playing with Hewitt but he has a lot of trouble with accents and couldn't understand a word Lleyton said to him.) getting back to top singles players playing doubles, it's pretty interesting, actually, because the top women used to team up for doubles a lot (Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, for example, and more recently Martina Hingis and a bunch of different women), but now it's pretty much down to the Olympics. (Dina and Sveta, play doubles and be awesome more frequently!) this makes me sad: players should be friends and play doubles together! especially ones I like and secretly think would make cute couples. or not-so-secretly in the case of Rafa/Nole, I guess.
other potential top-ten doubles pairings that I think would be awesome: JMDP and Gonzo! Tsonga and Gilly! (has this happened already? it probably has. they're really not fooling anybody.) for the lulz, Mandy and Andy R! what the hell, Rafa and Fed - the tennis collective would jizz their collective pants. o_O;; but that is okay, because I'm getting my dream dubs team in Cincinnati. ~smug~

Hoping Tebbutt knows something I don't, partly 'cause he's not the type to pull bunnies out of visors, and partly because he's in for some serious wrath from the tennis bloggerati if he did, and they're scary.

I think it got reported in the news that Dinara and Marat were going to play mixed doubles in the U.S. Open after she joked about asking for a wildcard at Roland Garros.
