meretricula: Rrrrrrafa Nadal! (whatever)

anything mean I have ever said about Juan Martin del Potro (um, not that I have ever said anything mean about him, I don't think, although I vaguely recall I was upset after Miami), I completely take it all back. I thought he would bend over and grab his ankles for TMF: way to prove me wrong, Gigantor. and we have only the second man to win a Grand Slam other than Roger or Rafa in the past however many years, and the first person other than Rafa to ever beat Fed in a GS final. props where props are due. also, he's kind of adorable! all lanky and stuff. I'm curious to see whether this will lead to the Big Four expanding into the Fab Five or something like that. Novak needs to get his shit together, seriously, the space between him and del Potro just shrank to a little over 600 points. (Nole, bb, please, I love you to bits and pieces but it kind of hurts me when you lose.)

also, Kim Clijsters! thank you for saving the US Open for me last night, and proving that moms can still play ball. I had an entertaining bitchfest with [livejournal.com profile] aramley a while back over the lack of tennis HABs to go along with the rather spectacular tennis WAGs, but Kim Clijsters' husband is definitely doing a stellar job of representing the husbands and boyfriends of the WTA. (also Sybille Bammer's boyfriend, I have to say. that is one dedicated, devoted partner.) I'm really hoping that this will lead to more attractive bfs sitting in the stands with fashionable shades and looks of blank incomprehension while the ladies kick ass and take names. (JJ's braindead model toyboy is a step in the right direction if you ask me!)

still quietly mourning the Rafa/Nole that could have been, of course, and longing for shiny happy fic to soothe the soul, but my sheer astonishment over del Potro's victory has made me feel a lot better. holy crap, who saw that coming?

I'm pretty sure I've said some mean things about JMDP but I also take them all back because awwwww, he is adorable!

If Novak becomes the 5th of the Fab Five I'm going to sulk forever.

Yay Kimmie! Her husband is hot, I approve. There could definitely be more hot HABs on the WTA tour. There could also be more hot HABs on the ATP tour. A girl can dream, right?

ugh, I know. I can only hope that Mandy will have some kind of hysterical meltdown and Novak will miraculously win shit again, so he can get back to number three.

okay, it's actually kind of scary that there are no out gay men in the ATP. like, the women have had Martina and Billie Jean to look up to since forever, but there's literally nobody on the men's side, and that's statistically pretty close to impossible. I don't know who the hypothetical one in every ten is, but I want to give him a hug and tell him we will still love him if his boyfriend sits in his box. (did you follow this crazy stuff about Tommy Robredo during the Open? I was so confused.)

Maybe Mandy finally buckles under the weight of the British media's inflated expectations, gives up tennis and becomes a mackerel fisherman in the Outer Hebrides with his soulmate Tim Henman, Novak recovers his number three spot by default and the boost of confidence helps him to get back his winning ways, and Andy Roddick becomes the fifth member of the Fab Five?

'Fab Five' makes me think of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

It would just be such a positive thing for there to be just one openly gay tennis player, particularly in the top 50 or whatever. Whoever the first person to come out is, they'll have to be seriously mentally tough. It's interesting to speculate what would happen on the business side of things too - I wonder if a sponsor would really dare to drop a gay player?

LOLOLOL WE CAN ONLY DREAM.

I honestly don't know - Martina Navratilova had a very hard time with sponsors, and so did Billie Jean King. but on the other hand that was a while ago, and I wonder if Maria Sharapova would have the same issues, you know? it's hard to tell how much is homophobia and how much is the "pretty people to the front" mentality. (though DAMN, Martina is one foxy fifty-year-old.) I think it would depend on how prominent the player is and how afraid the sponsor was of backlash for dropping them. it would be interesting to see how that Olympic diver's endorsements were affected by coming out, though I don't know if the situation is comparable.

IN an entirely unrealted vein

I have been crack-ficcing. I don't know why. I'll never post it. but I love this fic so.

Anyway, it is HP fandom. Starring Draco Malfoy

And I had to a bit of research, to determine what wood his wand of made of. It is hawthorn wood. So then I want a picture. I find one, with a decription of the wood beneath...
"A lovely rich blonde coloured wood with darker markings"

THIS IS SO BIZARRELY APPROPRIATE that I cannot help but gape at my screen for several seconds. And then rush to find someone to tell who will not look at me like "..." so Here we are. :)
