yuletide yay!

friends! Romans! countrywomen! you're signing up for yuletide, right? because you totally should. it's the most awesome seasonal fic-exchange imaginable, and it's great for those obscure book-fandoms where you want fic but nobody ever seems to be writing it.

I've been contemplating what I want to ask for, and I think I have it narrowed down to four requests. I'm not sure, though, because... well, you'll see.

Naomi Novik - Temeraire series
William Laurence/John Granby/Tharkay
slash would be awesome! any combination of the above would make me so unspeakably happy. (Granby is my favorite character, which is not to say that I don't love Tharkay/Laurence - I do! - but just that I would like Granby to make an appearance even if he isn't in the main pairing or trio.) if you don't want to go the slash route, wacky shenanigans, perhaps involving the dragons, would also delight me. all I ask is that they get a happy or at least hopeful ending. (no Jane-bashing, please. I love Jane.)

RPF - Classical history and literature
Virgil/Horace
this is my absurd academic OTP. I love them to distraction, and I believe with all the tin-hatted fervor at my disposal that they were totally in love. so pretty much anything about the two of them together will make me happy. (they don't have to be romantically in love if you're not comfortable with that; platonic mutual admiration and BFF-ness will do me fine.) poetical one-upmanship! road-trips with Maecenas! anxieties about the political situation! crazed AUs! late-night poetry readings! again, wacky shenanigans and happy endings are the way to my heart.

RPF - tennis
Rafael Nadal/Novak Djokovic
anything about them being total dorks in love is a-ok by me. I love their posses, too, so side-characters (including Novak's coterie of lady-friends) are very welcome. play-station dates! watching football together! Novak's amusement at Rafa's terminal fashion FAIL! I like them best when they're being the twelve-year-olds they totally are inside, and tease each other relentlessly. (oh, and I also adore their girlfriends: if you're not seeing the slash, I am all for them as friends who double-date.)

RPF - tennis
Rafael Nadal/Feliciano Lopez
one of the things I find most fascinating about Rafa is how he relates to the rest of the Spanish tennis players: he's so the spoiled baby of the family. they raised him right, though, and now he's such a good boy. I think his friendship with Feli is just darling; they really adore each other. I'd love anything about the two of them (and any other members of the Spanish Armada you see fit to include). if you would like a few potential starting points: ever-fabulous Feli mentoring young Rafa in fashion (or sex, or alcohol, or anything, really); Rafa being proud of Feli for helping bring home the Davis Cup in 2008; anything from when they were sharing a house at Wimbledon (subtlety: you're doing it wrong); anything from a Davis Cup tie they won together; or anything else that strikes your fancy! I love slash (as you may have noticed) and I'd be happy with porn, but I'd also be so so so happy with friendship fic. I love them so much!

so I'm not sure if it's fair to request two prompts in the same tiny fandom, but I want them! idk...

Hee, I always had the impression that the fourth request was for requesting another set/pair within a fandom you already chose. Ahahah, it's fair, it's fair. :D

haha, well, it's an option, not a requirement. I'm kind of hoping that by picking fandoms of relatively the same absurdly small size, I am not prejudicing my results in any direction. (also kind of hoping that my recipient will be in one of my absurdly small fandoms. even though I had a total blast writing Shakespeare fic last year, I really want to write TINY fandoms!)

Yuletide is daunting - I really want to sign up this year, but the list of fandoms is so immense that aside from tennis, I don't even know where to start! I love your requests, though :)

It's funny, because tennis rps is like my life and everything it tends not to occur to me that it's a tiny fandom. But I've been splashing around the shallow end of Supernatural fandom lately, and it's so mind-blowingly huge after tennis, it's disconcerting.

well, I think you'd have a lovely time with it - I did my first year. =) word of advice, though, especially for your first time, only volunteer for fandoms you know really well. you only need six! don't go overboard. I was really lucky not to get bitten with that.

oh god, SPN. that was... two major fandom conversions ago? I have a recs list somewhere if you're interested, I think. but yeah, that and Merlin and SGA are just so freaking massive. it's weird, but even though there's less fic, I think I prefer smaller fandoms. it's easier to really connect with people, and (selfishly) I like that you don't have to be a BNF to get readers. XP

Yeah, I was thinking maybe some Mary Renault stuff. I'm rereading my way through them now, and omg, I would love to get some fic of that.

I like small fandoms too. SGA and Merlin were both too daunting for me to write for, so I just lurked. Tennis is the first fandom I've ever been really involved in. I love that there isn't the same scary hierarchy of fans ranked by popularity.

I'll have to look up your rec list, since I trust your taste absolutely. I should warn that I have a weird thing about Wincest, though. Idek what it is, because I have no problems with fictional incest (I have written it myself on one occasion), it just doesn't really click for me. My latest interest in SPN is fuelled by my insane love for Castiel. And I like J2!

oh, that would be lovely! there's been some really great Renault fic in past years, actually. I'm guessing you're a fan of the Greek historicals? Mask of Apollo is my favorite. and The Last of the Wine, omg.

it's funny how big fandoms can have that effect, isn't it? I don't know if I've even so into a fandom rather than a source material before. I mean, I started out writing horrendous HP fic, yea these many years ago, and I remember writing fic was like talking to a wall - no real dialogue between fans at all.

oh, hmm. it was pretty Wincest-heavy, and I think my tastes have somewhat matured since I compiled it... there was some pretty good J2 recs, though. you've read belyste's fic, right? she does amazing J2. (I stopped watching SPN because the Wincest was dying in favor of Dean/Castiel. I like Castiel, but... he broke up my OTP. there can be no forgiveness. except for Pru's fic because that's different.)
