basically for Yuletide you make one request each for four fandoms for a specific combination of characters (up to four, I think), and you're matched up with a person who has volunteered to write the characters you want in at least one of those fandoms, and that person writes a story for whichever request he/she is qualified to. so you can't control which request gets filled, but at least one of them will be. and then during Yuletide Madness, the last couple of days before Christmas, all the requests are put up for everybody to see, and people write extra stories really fast for those prompts so they'll be in before the deadline. it's super fun!
