(224): They only knew me as the lesbian that passed out in a bathtub. That's not what you call friendship.
You Are Cordially Invited
Hart of Dixie - Zoe/Wade - PG - 1594
"If only I'd known when I was applying to medical school that my mother was right and it would only matter if I managed to find a man to marry me!" Zoe ranted. "I'm a woman past thirty-five and I'm not married, I must not be a real doctor! Clearly my years of study and medical practice mean nothing compared to my good repute as a qualification to actually practice medicine in this stupid town!"
52,529 words in total! And I think you can probably tell when my major academic deadlines were, because right before that is when all the heavy fic output is. (Plus the usual
yuletide bounty in December, of course.) Also, only three out of twenty-four fics weren't footie, oh dear. I am getting more and more mono-fandom, which is both nice and worrying. I like having roots down and getting to really know my community of fellow fans (and
touchline and
cornerflag are absolutely wonderful for me), but I used to be a lot more diversified. I love football fandom and I love all you awesome people who share my fannish squee, but let's be real, if you're going to put all your eggs in one basket this probably shouldn't be it. Sports fandom has a lot of mean and crazy people in it, and it's harder to avoid the assholes in a relatively small community. But I just don't feel the urge to write in other fandoms anymore! It's very strange.
My favorite story of this year: I cannot lie, sometimes when I am feeling down I go back to I Hope This Song Will Guide You Home and reread the bit where Victor and Andres are cuddling on the couch. I wrote that fic to please myself, because there was just something about Andres being all NO GO AWAY I WANT VICTOR that really got to me, and you can totally tell. It is completely tailored to what I want to read. So, uh, lots of cuddling and devoted, overprotective friends.
My best story this year: Sings The Revolution. Oh god, the amount of work that went into that fic, I cannot even begin to describe, but I look back at the finished product and still can't believe that I really did it.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Oof. See It Through With Newer Hands, or maybe I Am You Are Me (though it's hard to say that a drabble deserves more attention). Not necessarily for the writing itself so much as because I was really trying to say something important in those stories that I want more people to think about. It's hard to ask people to read gen, though.
Most fun story: Well, as a classicist, Ibra In The Underworld entertains me a lot! I don't know if it's equally amusing to people who haven't had to study a bunch of versions of Orpheus and Eurydice. XD
Hardest story to write: It Takes A Village, probably. I hadn't written Temeraire fic in a long time, I had to reread the entire series to get back into it, and even then I spent forever flailing around trying to get the premise to work as straight-up Tharkay/Laurence instead of Tharkay/Laurence/Granby. But that's
yuletide! (Sings The Revolution was more time-consuming but it felt easier, probably because I wasn't writing in a linear fashion.)
"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: I still cannot believe I wrote Madrid fic, ugh. Una Loba En La Bañera should be regarded as a manifestation of my deep love for
distira because that is the only reason I would ever have written it. (What's that you say? You meant something like incest or underage sex? Psh, I write tons of that. BUT MADRID FIC.)
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I'd say Little League In '93 Taught Me How To Take Defeat, if only because I had literally no conception of either Javi or Iker before I started on that fic, so I was creating my own personal canon as I went along. But also in the process of writing Sings The Revolution I think I got a much better appreciation for how big a part loving and wanting to have children plays in Lionel Messi's character. It's hard for me to wrap my brain around because I personally don't want to have children of my own, but the further I got into that fic the more I started to think of that part of his personality not as a convenient conflict that drives the plot but a really immutable bit of canon.
Biggest disappointment: The fic that's not on the list. Do you know how long I've been writing It's Been A Long Time Since I've Seen You Smile? Over a year. Seriously. This is ridiculous. When I finally finish it I should make a game out of seeing if people can tell which parts were written when.
Biggest surprise: You Are Cordially Invited, maybe? That was the first thing I'd written in Western media fandom in years. But I do love me some Hart of Dixie.
Most unintentionally telling story: Er. We Are The Next Time Around. Because if you tell me to finish a fic, of course I'm going to write an AU of it instead in which everything is terrible and necessitates tons of cuddling.
Sexiest story: La Gent Normal Com Tu.
