because it's Christmas, and I bitch a lot
Dec. 12th, 2007 05:02 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I'm going to upload a somewhat random assortment of songs. I don't have any particular selection mechanism; I'm just trying to pick stuff I like that I think other people might not have. on the other hand, I have no way of telling whether or not a band is "popular" so I may be putting up really well-known music that is new to me.
Rapowe Ziarno (Szyderap) by Abradab, unknown album.
okay, I don't know what the lyrics mean - I don't even know what language they're singing in. but I do know that this song is impossibly not to swish your ass to when you listen to it. also I feel less guilty about listening to techno-rap when I don't know what the words mean.
Cherry Blossom Girl, by Air, off Talkie Walkie. I'm not really sure what this song is about, but it's very soothing and pretty!
I just want to say hi
to the one I love
cherry blossom girl
Pinch Me, by the Barenaked Ladies, off Maroon.
I listen to this song when I'm feeling kind of grumpy, and the intro completely agrees with my mood - and then the music gets faster, and the song is still melancholy but I am bopping along happily singing along! ...and then people look at me funny and I realize I'm singing aloud in a public street. but that's okay.
I could leave but I'll just stay
all my stuff's here anyway
All of Your Love, by Hellogoodbye, off Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!
this song is so... perky! I mean, listen to it. aren't you smiling?
but you ain't never felt it
like you feel it right now
The listening crowd admired the lovely sound, by Handel, from Alexander's Feast
aren't I sneaky, putting in a classical song? honestly the song part is pretty boring, though. listen to the intro, with the strings, and then keep listening to the underpinnings. they are SO FREAKING COOL.
Poor Little Rich Boy, by Regina Spektor, off Soviet Kitsch
I kind of waffle back and forth on the subject of Regina Spektor. sometimes her music is really moving and cool, and sometimes her voice irritates me. can't explain it. I like this song most of the time, though, and it makes me think inescapably of The Great Gatsby.
you're so young, you're so god. damn. young
Sir Mannelig, by Garmarna, off Guds Speleman
I love Garmarna. their music is in... German, maybe? or some Nordic language? anyway, I can't understand it. I looked up the lyrics to Herr Mannelig, though, and they're hilarious. there's this knight, and he runs into a troll, and she asks him to marry her but he won't because she isn't Christian (at which point the thinking listener goes, but not because she's a TROLL?!). anyway, the music is a little hard to describe but it has bits that are kind of like world music and kind of like Gregorian chant. if that tells you anything.
Somebody More Like You, by Nicket Creek, off Why Should the Fire Die?
I love bitter break-up songs. Nickel Creek is kind of blue-grassy, so it doesn't have the screaming guitar and pounding percussion, but it's still so unbearably angry, and you can only tell from the lyrics.
I hope you find
somebody more your height
so you can see eye to eye
with someone as small as you
It's a Pose, by Nellie McKay, off Get Away From Me
I think that every woman at Harvard (or any other pretentious institute of higher learning) should hear this song at least once. it's about what enormous jackasses men are when they think they can get away with it.
yeah you went to Oxford
but your head's still in your boxers
but you're a man so what should I expect
Synthesized, by the Epoxies, off Stop the Future
it's techno-punk! it's fun! the singer can actually sing! what more do you need?
Between, by Vienna Teng, off Waking Hour
Vienna Teng's music is usually either very soothing or very happy (note I said her music, not her lyrics). this song is still very peaceful to listen to, until you listen to the lyrics and realize it's about the awkward space in a relationship where both people want to break up but neither has the guts to say so.
we are the same but our lives move along
and the third one between replaces what once was love
Don't Die in Me, by Mirah, off C'mon Miracle
Mirah is amazing. I had such a hard time picking just one song to put up here. but basically I think this song is also about a relationship splitting up.
but if you want something back
all the things that got cracked
when I felt like you lied to me
Mad World, by the Red Paintings, off WALLS
you may recall the version of this song by Gary Jules that was on the soundtrack to Donnie Darko. I like this one, possibly because it has cello (!) and I have a proprietary interest in music with string parts.
I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
the dreams in which I'm dying
are the best I've ever had
Chelsea Dagger, by the Fratellis, off Costello Music
I love this song. I don't know what the hell they're singing in those adorable accents, but it's so bouncy! and fun!
well you must be a girl with shoes like that
she said you know me well
I've seen you and little Steven and Johanna
round the back of the hotel
I Will Follow You Into the Dark, by Death Cab For Cutie, off Transatlanticism
okay, I'm really embarrassed that I like Death Cab For Cutie. that said, this song is really sweet. in a slightly bizarre way.
if heaven and hell decide
that they both are satisfied
and light up the 'no's in their vacancy signs
if there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
I will follow you into the dark
Chinese Translation, by M. Ward, off Post-War
this song is strange, but kind of cool
I sailed a wide wide sea
crawled up a tall, tall mountain
I met an old, old man
who sat beneath a sapling tree
Saw Red, by Sublime, off their Greatest Hits
I don't really know why I like Sublime, but for some reason their music is very listenable to me. and sometimes their lyrics are very funny. I didn't pick Date Rape because I figure a. most people have heard it and b. poetic justice aside, it's a pretty scary song. this is (another!) song about relationship troubles.
every day I love him just a little bit more
and he loves me the same
Not A Virgin, by Poe, off Haunted
this song is hilarious. it's just a girl grinding it in somebody's face that she's finally got some, and it wasn't from him.
darlin' I've been around
yeah I've been up and down the block
in fact I have been all over town
The Dirty Glass, by the Dropkick Murphys, off Blackout
ooh, another bitter relationship song - plus, hello, Dropkick Murphys.
you weren't the first to court me, boy
and you won't be the last
oh I'm sure I wasn't honey
I know all about your past
Bohemian Like You, by the Dandy Warhols, off Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia
I imagine most of you have heard this song, but it remains awesome. it probably resonates more if you're from California and have experienced this sort of hippie-yuppie lifestyle first-hand, but it's still funny out here on the east coast.
who's that guy
just hangin' at your pad
he's lookin' pretty bummed
oh you broke up that's too bad
I guess it's fair
if he always pays the rent
and he doesn't get bent
about sleeping on the couch when I'm there
Alfie, by Lily Allen, off Alright, Still
I maybe identify with this song too much, on account of also having a lazy layabout younger brother. still, extremely funny, and in a cute British accent that makes the sisterly nagging all the more endearing.
now how the hell do you ever expect that you'll get laid
when all you do is stay in playing your computer games
Hard Times, by Eastmountainsouth, off the Elizabethtown soundtrack (shame! shame! I know!)
cover of a nice Appalachian folk song. I like the singer's voice, and the song plays well in this updated form.
there's a song that will linger
forever in our ears
oh hard times come again no more
Shepherd, leave decoying, by Henry Purcell, from King Arthur
I have cunningly included another classical song! just listen to the lyrics. I almost cried with laughter. (it helps to know that in the opera this follows a seduction song wherein the shepherd attempts to lure the maidens into compromising positions with him.
Shepherd, shepherd, leave decoying
pipes are sweet on summer's day
but a little after toying
women have their shot to pay
Bury My Lovely, by October Project, off their eponymous record
I don't really know what's going on in this song; I just like to listen to it.
bury my lovely
hide in your room
bury my lovely
forget me soon
Devil In Disguise, by Elvis Presley
I'm probably the only person here who, when this track first came up on her iPod, frowned and said, "Goodness, he has a nice voice! Who is that?" but I digress. it's a fun song. I like to sing along, which is embarrassing when there turn out to be people in the next room over, but otherwise is a good thing.
you're the devil in disguise
oh yes you are
the devil in disguise
mm-mm-mm
Hey Jealousy, by the Gin Blossoms, off New Miserable Experience
what can I say? it's a pop song from my adolescence. it's... poppy.
you can trust me not to think
and not to sleep around
and if you don't expect too much from me
you might not be let down
I Don't Mean Maybe, by the Faders, off No Sleep Tonight
this song is simultaneously incredibly cheerful and incredibly angry. I have, as you've probably noticed, a thing for furious relationship songs. I especially like them when the songs are musically upbeat. the contrast gets me every time.
I found out you've been messing around
I heard it was all around town
you said that nothing went down
but I don't know if I believe you baby
Lovefool, but the Cardigans
for some reason I always thought this song was by the Cranberries. but apparently it isn't! it's one of those mostly-unrequited love songs, which are not my usual cup of tea, but I like the melody, and the lyrics aren't too soppy.
love me, love me, say that you love me
fool me, fool me, go on and fool me
love me, love me, pretend that you love me
lead me, lead me, just say that you need me
Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove, by Dead Can Dance, off Into the Labyrinth
this song is seriously weird, but also fun to listen to. draw your own conclusions!
never let it be said
I wasn't true
I gave you all my time
Portions for Foxes, by Rilo Kiley, off More Adventurous
this was the first song I ever heard by Rilo Kiley, and despite the fact that to this day I have no idea what the hell she's singing about, it made me go out and investigate the band further. they're pretty cool for indie-pop!
then the talking leads to touching
and the touching leads to sex
and then there is no mystery left
Sleepdriving, by Archives
I like to listen to this song when I'm going to sleep, appropriately enough. it's soothing. can't really understand the lyrics, but mostly I just like the kind of relentlessly slow-but-in-tempo chord progression.
I've deliberately left off a few artists on the grounds that I could never pick a single favorite song - The Dresden Dolls and Carbon Leaf, obviously, but also Jack Off Jill and Garbage, and Enter the Haggis and Flogging Molly because I lump them together with Dropkick Murphys as one big Scots-Irish themed band. I may do a post just for Poe and Mirah later, also, because they deserve more screen time.
Rapowe Ziarno (Szyderap) by Abradab, unknown album.

Date: 2008-03-23 10:51 pm (UTC)There are more cool songs like "Vänner och fränder"means Freinds and kin"(The melody of the tune is rather odd; perhaps it is older than most of the other medieval ballads. The lyrics tell the story of a maiden who marries the King's son, but refuses to go to bed with him. When a message arrives that poor Roland, her true love, is about to leave the harbour on his ship, she runs away from the rich Prince and sails away with Roland).
"Varulven" means Werewulf(medieval ballad in Sweden where a werewolf appears. There are other versions of it, some even more violent and gory).
Herr Holger(This Swedish medieval ballad tells the story of Sir Holger, a tax collector who puts too much in his own pocket. He is punished by King Kristian, who cuts off Sir Holger's head. Holger reappears as a ghoul to warn his wife that she might end up in hell - as he has done - if she doesn't give back what she hasn't righteously earned. However, his wife prefers a wealthy life to a prospect of heaven).
And there is more to check out at www.garmarna.se the are english translations of the songs and stories also.
