OMG BARÇA I LOVE YOU.
5-0. but mostly because Cristiano Ronaldo shoves Pep and the entire team storms up to defend their coach. led by Miniesta himself, who has to look up seven inches to see the top of Cristiano's hair, not that he lets that stop him. (with Victor only a little behind because he had to run all the way from his goal to the sideline. Pique had to drag him away.) children, he doesn't need you to protect him, but it's beyond sweet that you want to.
I swear to god I am writing this paper, but the inspiration would not leave me, so here, have (probably) the only Sernando fic I will ever write:
sent by: Fernando Torres at 23:11 29/11/10
5-0 JAJAJAJAJAJA
sent by: Sergio Ramos at 23:14 29/11/10
u r the worst boyfriend ever

i hate u and ur never getting laid again
just to make it clear, because I saw someone on Tumblr speculating that Fernando was probably cheering for Sergio: FERNANDO TORRES HATES REAL MADRID. I can guarantee you that the Clasico is the one match that every Atleti fan wants Barcelona to win. any excuse to post this clip:
note what he says at 0:24. XDD FERNANDO ILU. going to go write this essay now, and wish I were watching a replay of the Clasico with Fernando and Pepe instead. AHHH IT WOULD BE SO EPIC.

Date: 2010-11-30 05:07 am (UTC)ah yes this essay that I am totally writing right now. haha. oh man my outline consists of shit like this
again, line about Patroclus being father and son (and sun and moon and stars in the sky blah blah blah) to Achilles, also scene where Achilles calls Patroclus a little girl running to mommy i.e. Achilles, strange dynamics all around. but presence of Ascanius and closeness to his father create a whole new side to Aeneid – Iliad is for single dudes, Aeneid is for married with kids crowd lol
and I wonder why I will never succeed in academia XD

Date: 2010-12-01 08:34 am (UTC)i changed my mind though. aside from the insinuations that barca fans are too blindly loyal to see their own flaws, i can't really fault her for either post. she takes every opportunity to point out all the unsportsmanlike things the opposition did, and glosses over the things that her own team did. isn't that what a supporter is supposed to do? it's like, the exact opposite approach from how i approach a paper. not like hundred-page thesis-scale papers, mind. but for small five-to-eight-pagers i go through the source material, type up relevant quotes, then cobble together a likely-looking argument from said quotes. the way she seems to be doing it is coming up with a thesis argument beforehand, then looking for all the evidence to support it and ignoring the evidence against it. which, tbf, is what we all do as fans to some extent. but the intentional dig at barca fans for being somehow ... less rational? .... still hurts. god what a shitty analogy it's three in the morning i should go to bed and stop trying to comapre football and academia.
I have eloped with your analogy.
Date: 2010-12-01 09:51 am (UTC)most of the things she's complaining about did happen (I still think getting upset at Messi for taking that tumble is wrong - when my commentator saw that tackle he was horrified, and that shit happens to Messi ALL THE TIME), so ok, whatever. don't think Pique showing five to the home fans is disrespectful (and if you don't want him to do that how about you don't get scored on five times...) but interpretations are going to vary. the thing is - a lot of Barcelona fans admit that Pep shouldn't have done what he did. it was atypical of him. (not going to lie and say I didn't enjoy the aftermath, but I'm shallow and Victor Valdes is hot when he's angry.) we're not all proud of the Pinto whistling incident. if Messi did dive (he got an elbow to the face, I'm pretty sure that is a carding offense, but whatever) I'm not proud of that either. but the fact that Barcelona fans spend less time apologizing for their team doesn't necessarily mean that they're more forgiving. it could just mean there's less to forgive. (look, I'm sorry, I have never seen ANY Barcelona player do something comparable to straight-red fouling the opposition's player and then shoving both their captains on the way off the field.) idk, I'm not saying it's always true. but I saw a lot of fans leaping to the defense of Alonso and Ramos over the deliberate cards, for example, and Guardiola responded to that incident by taking Pique off so he wouldn't get carded again. sometimes the team really does just give us less cause for embarrassment.
Barcelona, IN GENERAL, gets fewer cards and commits fewer fouls than other teams because of the way they play. it's part of their philosophy, right up there along with "receive, pass, offer". the fans are self-righteous, I'll freely admit, but the team does its best to give justification for that. ugh I'm sorry for rambling, you're right, it just kind of hurts for some reason to see my team and its fans slagged off. ♥ you!
Re: I have eloped with your analogy.
Date: 2010-12-01 04:36 pm (UTC)The thing that kind of gets me isn't the defensiveness over C.Ron and Ramos. It's the suggestion that somehow Barcelona fans are less classy than madridistas, and I'm sorry, but COME ON. I kind of get not seeing eye to eye over the behavior of some of the players--I know that madridistas in general are not that fond of Pique, although I'm not clear on the exact reasons why. I will say that putting up the hand at the Camp Nou is one thing, but I'd probably be facepalming just a tad if this game had been played in the Bernabeu.
But to generalize that cules are unclassy while madridistas aren't is just...huh? I've seen some truly ridiculous comments from madridistas in the wake of the game, just like I've seen truly classy comments from other madridistas. I'm sure there are unclassy cules who need to check themselves, but to generalize like that is kind of ridiculous and doesn't help the situation. Moreover...look. I get that there's a tendency to paint Barcelona as the angels and RM as the Big Bad, and I actually think that's generally unfair to BOTH teams. It sets up unrealistic expectations for one team that they straight up aren't going to always live up to, and villainizes another. Now that being said, you're totally right--Barcelona, on general, gives us a lot less to apologize for. That is just a fact. I'd be MORTIFIED if I saw, say, Pique or Valdes acting the way that Ramos did in this last game. But they haven't. Not every RM player is a villain, and when C.Ron goes down to the ground, it's not always a dive. But...look, there IS a track record. End of story.

i left a longass comment at una's last night saying, essentially, this and got called out to "gtfo with this trolling" ahahahaha.
in retrospect i shouldn't have left the comment. i mean it's a madrid blog, there's going to be a madrid bias, and barca supporters commenting over there is not going to convince anyone of anything. it's just going to make them more defensive when they might not have been all that defensive to begin with. it's true, our team does give us less to apologize for, but i wouldn't be caught dead actually saying this to a madridista's face. that's the definition of wankbait right there.
<3 you both

Date: 2010-12-01 08:45 pm (UTC)*throws hands up* Well, there you go. I mean, honestly, I do think it's going to be tricky for anyone to be having rational discussions about this right now, there's defensiveness on both sides. At this point, I'm just gonna say, "Okay, good luck with the season, sorry about Higuain, see you in April."

AHAHAHAH GOD I ALMOST WANT TO SAY JUST THIS. But I'm not going to, because hello, MAJOR wankbait. I still think it's absolutely true, mind you, but I don't actually want to make any madridista heads explode. (besides, if anybody needs proof, I'm just gonna point to Ramos' card tally. NUFF SAID.)
<3 you back.

Date: 2010-12-02 01:45 pm (UTC)I know that madridistas in general are not that fond of Pique, although I'm not clear on the exact reasons why.
I mean, basically he's Barça born and bred and he can be outspoken about how superior he thinks Barcelona is to every other team on the planet. funnily enough he doesn't have a patch on Xavi's ability to run his mouth but Xavi's been on the NT for a really long and I think affection for him in La Roja carries over a little. I'm always surprised by the Pique hate too - he seems really nice and he's really well-spoken for a 23-year-old - but he is probably the most prominent of the younger generation in the media, so that might explain some of it. (to be honest I don't get the Pique fangirling either, but as I've said before, he looks like my little brother and I just can't find that attractive, ever.)
the one legitimate complaint about Pique that pops up is the gesture he makes when he scores - he pulls his eyes to the side, which is a really racist way of referring to Asian people in Spain. he's said in interviews that he does it because it's a private gesture between him and his cousin Montserrat (who has Down's Syndrome, btw; Pique does activist work for children with Down's Syndrome because of her, I think) because it makes her laugh, so that's how he dedicates a goal to her. it's one of those things where you can see he has good intentions, but... I wish he wouldn't. =/

Date: 2010-12-02 02:26 pm (UTC)Heeeee, no, that's an excellent reason, don't worry. For me, Pique has that bizarre quality (that I normally associate with British actors, but whatever) to be really attractive one minute, and the next minute have me go, "Oh my God, WHAT IS YOUR FACE AND WHAT IS IT DOING?" I thought this was a phenom limited to British actors, but hey, it's good to see the Spaniards getting into it.
it's one of those things where you can see he has good intentions, but... I wish he wouldn't. =/
...never would I have thought I'd be glad that Pique doesn't score that many goals, but YEESH. Again, you're right, good intentions, but at the same time...YEESH, I SAY. From the little I've seen of him, he actually does seem really nice--I remember him making a joke about the pic of him and Zlatan that blew up in the media and was impressed at his ability to poke fun at the whole w/o also sounding homophobic, but w/e w/e.
On another (more upbeat) note, I got my dad to watch the ESPN 3 replay of el Clasico, and by the end of it, he was saying that this was the best game of football (he's from Africa, so he actually DOES call it that, hee) he'd ever seen. Also, much like me, he was bursting into laughter at the closeup of Iker's bitchfacing. In related news, my dad is awesome, the end.
